East Moncoeur Island is agranite island, with an area of 14ha.
It is part ofTasmania’s Rodondo Group, lying in northernBass Strait south ofWilsons Promontory inVictoria, in south-easternAustralia.[1]
The island was sighted by LieutenantJames Grant on 9 December 1800 from the survey brig HMSLady Nelson and named after"Captain Moncur of the Royal navy".[2]
Recorded breedingseabird andwader species includelittle penguin,short-tailed shearwater,fairy prion,common diving-petrel,Pacific gull,silver gull andsooty oystercatcher.[1] The island is part of theWilsons Promontory Islands Important Bird Area, identified as such byBirdLife International because of its importance for breeding seabirds.[3]Reptiles present include themetallic skink,Bougainville's skink andWhite's skink.[1]
