East was aEuropean Parliament constituency in Ireland. It elected 3Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) on theelectoral system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV).

History and boundaries

The constituency was created for the 2004 election and was a successor to the constituency ofLeinster. From 2004 to 2009, it comprised theLeinster counties excluding theDublin constituency. For the 2009 election, the counties ofLongford andWestmeath were transferred from East to theNorth-West constituency. It then comprised the countiesCarlow,Kildare,Kilkenny,Laois,Louth,Meath,Offaly,Wexford andWicklow.[1]

For the2014 European Parliament election the constituency was abolished, with the northern part (Kildare, Laois, Louth, Meath, Offaly) transferred to the newMidlands–North-West constituency, and the southern part (Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow) transferred to theSouth constituency.[2]
