Eagle-1 is a future Europeantechnology demonstration satellite for in-orbit demonstration of space-basedquantum key distribution.[1][2][3][4] The satellite was developed by a consortium of companies led by theLuxembourg-headquarteredSES for theEuropean Union (EU) and theEuropean Space Agency (ESA).[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]Eagle-1 is the first step in development of a sovereign Europeanquantum communication infrastructure,[12][13][14][15] specifically the EuroQCI network.[16][17][18][19] The satellite will be launched tolow-Earth orbit[4] on aVega C rocket from theGuiana Space Centre inFrench Guiana[20][21][22] in late 2026 or early 2027.[23][5]
