ESPN PPV is the banner forpay-per-view events produced byESPN. The service primarily serves as the distributor forESPN College Extra, anout-of-market sports package that carriescollege basketball and football events. The service was originally launched in 1999 asESPN Extra SkyREPORT.COM News[1] and was renamedESPN PPV in 2001.

History

[edit]

In March 2005, the unit broadcast its firstboxing PPV, headlined byShane Mosley vs.David Estrada.[2] ESPN's contract with the promoterTop Rank since 2017 includes the possibility of PPV events. In January 2019, ESPN announced its first Top Rank PPV, betweenTerence Crawford andAmir Khan for theWBO Welterweight title.[3]

Collaboration

[edit]

Although ESPN had preferred to use its subscription streaming serviceESPN+ for larger fights not on linear TV,Bob Arum stated that the fight's scale was too large to be covered by rights fees alone.[4][5] In December 2019, it was announced that ESPN would jointly produce theDeontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury II PPV withFox Sports.[6]
