Images andvideos use specifictransfer functions to describe the relationship betweenelectrical signal, scene light and displayed light.

Theopto-electronic transfer function (OETF) is thetransfer function having the scene light as input and converting into the picture or video signal as output. This is typically done within acamera.^[1]

Theelectro-optical transfer function (EOTF) is thetransfer function having the picture or video signal as input and converting it into the linear light output of the display.^[1] This is done within adisplay device.

Theopto-optical transfer function (OOTF) is thetransfer function having the scene light as input and the displayed light as output. The OOTF is thecomposition of the OETF and the EOTF and is usuallynon-linear.^[1]

• Some OETF and EOTF have an initiallinear portion followed by a non-linear part (e.g.sRGB andRec.709^[2]).

• Rec. 601,Rec. 709 andRec. 2020: TheITU-Rrecommendations BT.601, BT.709 and BT.2020 describe the reference OETF of respectivelySD-TV,^[3]HD-TV^[2] andUHD-TV.^[4] They are identical OETF based on agamma curve and used forSDR-TV.^[3][2][4]
• BT.1886: TheITU-R Recommendation BT.1886 is the reference EOTF ofStandard Dynamic Range TV (SDR).^[5]
• sRGB: sRGB defines a transfer function based on a gamma curve and used for monitors, printers and theWeb. sRGB is standardized asIEC 61966-2-1:1999^[6]

• S-Log: Developed bySony fordigital cameras in order to increase captureddynamic range^[7]
• Canon Log: Developed byCanon fordigital cameras in order to increase captureddynamic range^[8]
• Arri Log C: Developed by Arri fordigital cameras in order to increase captureddynamic range^[9]

These transfer functions have been developed to allowHDR display:

• Perceptual quantizer:PQ is a transfer function developed byDolby forHDR and allowing aluminance level of up to 10,000cd/m². It is standardized inRec. 2100^[10] and also asSMPTE ST 2084.^[11]
• Hybrid log–gamma:HLG is a transfer function developed byNHK andBBC forHDR and offering somebackward compatibility onSDR displays. HLG is a hybrid transfer function in which the lower half of the signal values use agamma curve and the upper half of the signal values use alogarithmic curve.^[12][13] It is standardized inRec. 2100.^[10]
