Thedune shearwater (Puffinus holeae), also known as theCanarian shearwater orHole's shearwater, was a relatively largeshearwater which bred in theCanary Islands archipelago of the NorthAtlantic Ocean. Fossils have also been found in the Figueira Brava cave archaeological site on the western coast ofPortugal.[2] Thespecific epithet honours Mrs Jean Hole, who collected fossil material of the species on theJandia Peninsula ofFuerteventura.[1] It was intermediate in size between theManx andCory's shearwaters. Its breeding colonies were indune fields, in contrast to those of the smaller and sympatriclava shearwater which bred inlava fields. The species went extinct about 2000–3000 years ago, contemporaneously with the first human settlement of the islands by theGuanches, likely due to be human predation.[2]
