Duncan Smith (born 17 May 1983) is an IrishLabour Party politician who has been aTeachta Dála (TD) for theDublin Fingal East constituency since the2024 general election, and previously for theDublin Fingal constituency from2020 to 2024.[1]
Smith was a member ofFingal County Council from 2014 to 2020. Smith contested the2019 Dublin Fingal by-election, receiving 3,821 first preference votes (15.2% of the vote), but was not elected.[2][3][4]
At the2020 general election, Smith was elected as a TD for Dublin Fingal.[5][6] After his election to theDáil, James Humphreys was co-opted to Smith's seat onFingal County Council.[7] He was one of two TDs to nominateAlan Kelly for the position of Labour Party leader in the 2020 leadership election.[8]
In 2021, Smith received media attention for criticisingMichael andDanny Healy-Rae in the Dáil, after the two TDs had accused Labour of being "anti-worker" after proposing azero-COVID strategy, accusing the Healy-Raes of coming from a background of "Fianna Fáil privilege and millions and millions of euros" and "pretending to be working class."[9][10][11][12] He received praise fromMiriam Lord for this, being dubbed a "working-class hero" in her column.[13]
Smith was the Labour Party Director of Elections forIvana Bacik in the2021 Dublin Bay South by-election.[14]
At the2024 general election, Smith was re-elected to the Dáil inDublin Fingal East.
Smith's father was a carpenter by profession.[9] He went to secondary school atMount Temple Comprehensive School. Smith studied atDublin City University, completing a bachelors degree in business studies and a master's degree in International Security and Conflict Resolution.[15] He is currently[when?] studying for a PhD in nuclear disarmament studies.[16]
He is married to Lynsey, and they have one son.[17]
