Dumitru Antonescu (25 March 1945 – 25 April 2016) was aRomanianfootball player.
Antonescu was born on 25 March 1945 inConstanța, Romania and began playing junior-level football in 1957 at local club Electrica, after four years moving toSteaua București for one year.[1][2][3] Afterwards he returned to play at senior level for his hometown teamFC Constanța, making hisDivizia A debut on 15 February 1967 under coachVirgil Mărdărescu in a 1–0 victory againstPetrolul Ploiești, the team finishing theseason in fourth place.[1][2][3][4] In his 17 seasons spent at FC Constanța, the highlights were another fourth place in the1973–74 season and a personal record of seven goals netted in the1976–77 season.[1] He managed to become the club's all-time leader of Divizia A appearances with 390 games in which he scored 12 goals.[1][5] During his years spent withThe Sailors, the team also suffered a relegation at the end of the1977–78 season, but Antonescu stayed with the club, helping it earn promotion back to the first league three years later.[1] For the way he played in 1973, Antonescu was placed fourth in the ranking for theRomanian Footballer of the Year award.[6] In 1979 he spent a short period playing forȘoimii Cernavodă inDivizia C.[1][7] He made his last Divizia A appearance on 24 November 1982 in Farul's 1–1 draw againstDinamo București.[1][8]
Antonescu played 13 games forRomania, making his debut on 29 October 1972 under coachAngelo Niculescu in a 2–0 home win overAlbania in the1974 World Cup qualifiers.[9][10][11] In these qualifiers he appeared in a total of five matches, including Romania's biggest ever victory, a 9–0 win overFinland.[9][12] He also played in a 3–1 victory againstGreece in the1973–76 Balkan Cup.[9] His last game for the national team was a 0–0 draw againstDenmark in theEuro 1976 qualifiers.[9]
After he ended his playing career, Antonescu was coach from 1985 until 1987 atDunărea Călărași.[2][13] He then worked atFarul Constanța's youth center for almost three decades, spending the last year of his life as a technical director at ACS Prejmer.[2][3]
Antonescu died on 25 April 2016 in a hospital inBucharest at age 71.[1][2][3]
