James Dudley Andrew (born July 28, 1945)[ 1] [ 2] is an Americanfilm theorist , particularly specializing inworld cinema ,aesthetics , andFrench cinema . He is R. Selden Rose Professor Emeritus ofFilm andComparative Literature atYale University , where he has taught since the year 2000.
Andrew earned a BA from theUniversity of Notre Dame in 1967, an MFA fromColumbia University in 1969, and a Ph.D from theUniversity of Iowa in 1972. He studied English and philosophy before learning filmmaking.
Before moving to Yale, he taught for thirty years at theUniversity of Iowa . Andrew's works have been widely translated, including into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian, and Polish.[ 3]
He has been awarded aGuggenheim Fellowship [ 4] and was named a Commandeur in theOrdre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, its highest distinction. In 2006, he was elected a Fellow of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences .[ 1] In 2011, he received theSociety for Cinema and Media Studies Distinguished Career Achievement Award.[ 5]
