William Davis "Dub"Garrett Jr. (January 29, 1925 – July 24, 1976) was an American professionalfootball player who played for theBaltimore Colts of theAll-America Football Conference (AAFC) and theChicago Bears of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football atMississippi State University.

Early life and college

William Davis Garrett Jr. was born on January 29, 1925, inDundee, Mississippi and attended Dundee High School.[1] Helettered for theMississippi State Bulldogs from 1944 to 1947.[1] He was named second-teamAll-SEC by both theAssociated Press (AP) andUnited Press (UP) his freshman year in 1944.[2][3] In 1946, he was named second-team All-SEC by the AP again.[4] Garrett was named first-team All-SEC by both the AP and UP his senior year in 1947.[5][6] He was inducted into Mississippi State's athletic hall of fame in 1999.[7]

Professional career

Garrett was selected by theBaltimore Colts of theAll-America Football Conference (AAFC) in the second round, with the 10th overall pick, of the1948 AAFC draft, and by theChicago Bears of theNational Football League (NFL) in the third round, with the 21st overall pick, of the1948 NFL draft.[1] He chose to sign with the Colts and started all 14 games for them during the1948 AAFC season.[8][9] He also started one playoff game that season.[9] Garrett played in 11 games, starting seven, in 1949, the final season of the AAFC.[9]

Garrett signed with the Bears on October 7, 1950.[8] He played in three games for the Bears during the 1950 season, recovering three fumbles for 62 yards and a touchdown.[9] He led the NFL in fumble return yards and fumble return touchdowns that season.[9] He was released in 1951.[8]

Death

Garrett died on July 24, 1976, in Dundee, Mississippi.[1]
