The genusDryobates was named by the German naturalistFriedrich Boie in 1826 with thedowny woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) as thetype species.[1]

The genus nameDryobates is from the Greek compound word δρυο-βάτης : 'woodland walker'; fromδρῦς :drus (genitiveδρυός :dryós) meaning woodland and-βάτης :-bátēs meaning walker.[2] In theeBird/Clements Checklist of Birds of the World, the genusDryobates is expanded to include all the species inLeuconotopicus andVeniliornis.[3]
