Peter Paul van Loyen (bornFebruary 10,1941 inRecklinghausen) is a former Germanjournalist, television presenter, andcorrespondent.
In the1970s, Peter van Loyen worked as a correspondent forZDF inEast Berlin. He gained greater prominence when he was expelled from theGDR on May 14, 1979, for conducting aninterview without permission with the writerStefan Heym, who was under investigation in the GDR for “currency offenses”.[1][2][3] This led to extensive press coverage and political reactions.[4][5][6] He also hosted the ZDF television magazineLänderspiegel from 1988 to 1992.[7] Van Loyen retired in 2003.
With the entry into force of a new implementing provision dated April 11, 1979, the situation for West German correspondents in the GDR became increasingly difficult, partly due to the threat of criminal prosecution for potentialinformants. Despite these circumstances, van Loyen conducted an interview with Stefan Heym without a permit and included the writer's statements in a report for ZDF'sheute program on May 12. Joachim Jauer, a former colleague of van Loyen at ZDF's GDR studio, later said in an interview that the latter invited Heym to make a statement by telephone, but had agreed with him in advance that he was not actually allowed to interview him. Van Loyen then held the microphone over the fence, and Heym, on the other side, made a statement regarding the investigations against him.[8] Even in the broadcast report, van Loyen was not recognizable as either the questioner or Heym's interlocutor. Nevertheless, the GDR considered this to be “a violation of its laws” and summoned van Loyen to theMfAA at 1:00 p.m. on May 14, 1979, where he was informed that he had to leave the GDR within 24 hours and his accreditation was revoked with immediate effect. In addition, he was prohibited (under penalty of arrest) from engaging in “public activities” until his departure. In response to this incident, on May 17, 1979, a letter from international correspondents was sent to GDR Prime MinisterWilli Stoph, which sharply criticized the expulsion of van Loyen. In contrast, the Leipzig district leadership expressed its full support for this measure against van Loyen in a telegram to the party organs department.[9] The federal government inWest Germany condemned the incident in a formal protest.[5]
Peter van Loyen has been a member of theSPD since September 2016. At the end of 2022, he was elected to the executive committee of the SPD local association inLathen.[10]
