Doug Chiang (Chinese:江道格; born 16 February 1962) is an American film designer and artist. He is vice president and executive creative director ofLucasfilm and previous Chief Creative Officer (CCO) atLucasfilm.

Early life and education

Chiang was born inTaipei,Taiwan.[1] His dad had gone toMichigan in the United States for college, and moved the family toDearborn, Michigan when Chiang was 5 years old.[2][3] His parents encouraged him to assimilate into American culture by speaking more English, which Chiang described as one of the ways the family tried to fit in. Chiang therefore lost his ability to speak Chinese over the years.[3] Nonetheless, he characterized his lifestyle as "still very culturally Chinese", citing the strong work ethic imposed by his parents.[3]

Chiang was inspired by theoriginalStar Wars film andthe accompanying art design book.[4] He studiedindustrial design at theCollege for Creative Studies until 1982.[5] He later studied film production at theUniversity of California, Los Angeles, and graduated in 1986. During his time in college, he was an illustrator and art director for theDaily Bruin and involved with the Association of Chinese Americans.[2]

Career

During the late 1980s, he worked at various production studios includingRhythm and Hues. Chiang eventually joinedIndustrial Light & Magic as a creative director where he worked on films such asTerminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) andForrest Gump (1994). In 1995, he was hired to lead Lucasfilm's art department;[4] he was the design director forStar Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) andEpisode II – Attack of the Clones (2002).[6] Afterwards, he was aproduction designer onRobert Zemeckis'The Polar Express. Outside of film, he collaborated with authorOrson Scott Card on an illustratedscience-fiction book calledRobota.

He founded DC Studios[7] in 2000 with his creation,Robota, as a primary project. Along withSparx Animation Studios inHo Chi Minh City, he created several animated shorts depicting the world ofRobota in action.

In 2004, Chiang co-founded Ice Blink Studios and worked for Zemeckis onBeowulf. Ice Blink closed in 2007, becoming the core of the facility forImageMovers Digital, a pioneeringperformance capture animation studio.[8][9]

Chiang returned to theStar Wars franchise as the concept artist forThe Force Awakens as well as production designer forRogue One. His otherStar Wars includes the filmsSolo andThe Rise of Skywalker, and the television seriesThe Mandalorian andObi-Wan Kenobi.[10]

Chiang has won numerous awards throughout his career, including anAcademy Award and aBAFTA forDeath Becomes Her,[11][12] a BAFTA forForrest Gump,[13] a FOCUS Award for his independent filmMental Block,[14] aClio Award for his work on a Star Wars campaign[15][16] and The BrandLaureate Award.[17]
