Dorothea Wierer (Italian:[doroˈtɛːaˈviːrer],German:[doʁoˈteːaˈviːʁɐ]; born 3 April 1990) is an Italianbiathlete competing in theBiathlon World Cup. Together withKarin Oberhofer,Dominik Windisch andLukas Hofer she won a bronze medal in theMixed relay at the2014 Winter Olympics, inSochi,Russia. At the2018 Winter Olympics inPyeongchang,South Korea she won again the bronze medal in theMixed relay withLisa Vittozzi,Lukas Hofer andDominik Windisch. At the2022 Winter Olympics inBeijing,China, she won her first individual medal in theSprint. She is the2019 Mass Start World Champion and the2020 Pursuit andIndividual World Champion.

Career

Wierer has won her firstBiathlon World Championships medal, placing third in theWomen's relay together withNicole Gontier,Michela Ponza andKarin Oberhofer[2] at theBiathlon World Championships 2013 inNové Město na Moravě, which was the first ever medal for Italian women at theBiathlon World Championships. At the2019 Championships inÖstersund, she won the gold medal in the12.5 km Mass Start, also a first for Italian women in Biathlon.[3] She has currently won 12 medals in total, including 4 Golds, 5 Silvers and 3 Bronzes.

At the start of the2015–16 season, Wierer recorded the first win in her career in theBiathlon World Cup inÖstersund and as of the end of 2021-22 season, Wierer has finished on the podium 45 times with 13 wins. She has also finished on the podium in 23 relays, including five victories. She has won the2018–19 Overall World Cup (first Italian to do so, including men[4][5]). Wierer defended the overall title in the2019–20 Season (the first woman to do sinceMagdalena Forsberg in 2001/02[A]) and has also won 4 disciplines cup, the2015–16 Individual World Cup, the2018–19 Pursuit World Cup, the2019–20 Mass Start World Cup and the2020-21 Individual World Cup.

In February 2019, Wierer became the third biathlete (after FrenchMartin Fourcade andMarie Dorin Habert) to achieve a victory in every[B] biathlon discipline.[6]

Wierer has won three medals from Olympic Games. InSochi, she won a bronze medal in theMixed relay. InPyeongchang, she won another bronze medal in the same discipline,mixed relay.[7] InBeijing she won her first individual medal inSprint.
