Doomguy orDoom Slayer[a] is theprotagonist of theDoom franchise byid Software. He was created by American video game designerJohn Romero and was introduced as theplayer character in the original 1993 video gameDoom. Within theDoom series, Doomguy is ademon huntingspace marine dressed in green combat armor who rarely speaks on-screen. InDoom Eternal, he is voiced by American voice actor Matthew Waterson, while Jason Kelley voices the character in that game's downloadable contentThe Ancient Gods: Part Two. A different character with a role similar to that of Doomguy was portrayed byKarl Urban in the2005 film adaptation.
Doomguy has appeared as a guest character in several other games, includingQuake andTony Hawk's Pro Skater as well as including his likeness as acustomizable skin for theMii Gunner character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and being added as an outfit inFall Guys andFortnite. He has received mainly positive reviews.
Initially, the Marine is not referred to by name in theoriginal game. Designer and programmerJohn Romero described this choice as increasing player immersion: "There was never a name for the [Doom] marine because it's supposed to be YOU [the player]".[3][4] The character sprites were created byAdrian Carmack, based on an initial sketch and clay model he made.[5] In 2017, Romero stated that he was the original model of the character for the cover box art.[6] In 2020, Romero humorously stated that the name of the character was "Doom Guy".[7] In 2021,Doom Eternal's director Hugo Martin revealed that a female Doomguy was nearly added to the game, but was scrapped due to how much of an endeavor it would have been.[8]
Tom Hall's original design draft, "The Doom Bible", described several planned characters, all of whom went unused in the final version. The sole non-playable character, Buddy Dacote, bore the most similarities to the original game's eventual protagonist. "Dacote" is an acronym for "dies at conclusion of this episode", and Buddy was supposed to be killed by aboss at the end of the planned third episode. In the finished product, this nearly happens to the Marine in the final level of the first episode, but the character survives.[9] Later, when asked, Tom Hall and John Romero confirmed that the marine is a descendant ofWolfenstein protagonistB.J. Blazkowicz.[10][11]
The unnamed protagonist of the series is a Marine who is often referred to in the fan community as the "Doomguy". id Software chose a somewhat generic pictorial representation of the Marine for the box art, as well as for gameplay purposes (damage feedback and story transitions).
The box art for the originalDoom, which was done byDon Ivan Punchatz, shows the Doomguy firing a weapon (which does not make an appearance in the final game) at a horde of Demons below him as one of them grabs his left wrist, while a fellow Marine (similar battle dress uniform, except in grey) in the background is rushing to catch up. This image is also used in the introduction screen ofDoom, where the Doomguy has a shotgun clutched in his left hand, while a Baron of Hell kills the grey-uniformed Marine in the background. The Doomguy appears without a helmet, in the ending toThe Ultimate Doom episode IV "Thy Flesh Consumed", then again in the cover art ofDoom II where he is fighting aCyberdemon with a shotgun.
For the player's in-game avatar in single-player mode (also seen at the ending ofDoom II), the Doomguy wears green armor and a light grey space helmet that conceals his facial features. Several corpses of other Marines are occasionally encountered, and they feature the same uniform as the Doomguy. In multiplayer mode there is apalette swap applied; with players either green, indigo (gray), brown, and/or red, depending on player number.[12]
ForDoom andDoom II, the Doomguy's face is seen in the game'sHUD, where it is shown as a white male with blue eyes and light brown hair in abuzz cut. InDoom,Doom II, andFinal Doom, the Marine expresses little emotion at the horror unfolding around him, maintaining a stern and alert glare, eyes constantly darting left and right. When the Marine takes damage, his reaction is a mixture of pain and anger. The Marine grins upon picking up a new weapon, and the most emotional face is seen when the Marine suffers 20hit points or more taken away during a single attack, where the player is supposed to show a shocked face. However, this behavior is actually broken in the original versions ofDoom,Doom II andFinal Doom, as said expression only shows if you heal 20 health during the period a large amount of damage was taken. It is fixed in most fan-madesource ports made for the game, but most still allow the player to re-enable the broken "ouch face" functionality.
The Marine inDoom 64 has a slightly modified green armor with black highlights, a black helmet with an antenna, and a blue visor. InWolfenstein RPG, it is hinted that the Doom 64 Marine is a descendant ofWilliam "B.J." Blazkowicz, to whom the Marine's helmetless look in the original games bears a striking similarity. In a reference to the Marine's confrontation with theCyberdemon, when Blazkowicz defeats the "Harbinger of Doom", the creature states that he will return in the future to confront his descendants.
InDoom 3, an alternate version of the Doomguy appears as the protagonist. He wears green armor with exposed arms, his facial features are not concealed, his muscular build is less exaggerated, and he has thick black hair. During the game, the character can interact with several characters, most of whom, like Sergeant Kelly, give the player some briefing regarding his mission. The character remains silent throughout and is portrayed as tough and fearless in the game's cut scenes; generally only glaring at the demons he sees. When he discovers the towering Cyberdemon for the game's final battle, however, he steps back in fear.[13]
The Marine in the expansionDoom 3: Resurrection of Evil is a different character than the Doomguy inDoom 3, being an older and more heavysetcombat engineer with a blackbuzz cut who wears pale blue armor. This character is also shown to take enjoyment out of using the demonic powers available in the game, as cutscenes show him grinning with glee upon discovering the Artifact.[13]
InDoom (2016), Doomguy is more vaguely characterized: Doomguy's title is now "The DOOM Slayer", is never seen nor heard other than from the first person, and other than gameplay at the beginning of the game that shows him having a white skin color and the muscular masculine suit seen in the introduction, practically no details are revealed. The DOOM Slayer's eyes and nose can be made out through the visor of his helmet on the game's box art, the 3D model viewer, and hisQuake Champions appearance.[14] It has been also noted for its visibly irreverent tone conveyed by its hand gestures, fist bumping a small Doomguyfigurine,[15] and a late-game moment where the DOOM Slayer decides to make a backup of a friendly AI rather than erasing it.[16][17]
Doom Eternal is more detailed about the Slayer's characterization relative to the previous episode: Doomguy is seen without a helmet in first-person, and for the first time in the series' history, he also speaks, voiced in a flashback cutscene by Matthew Waterson. He is stated to be immortal, as he does not need to sleep, eat, drink or excrete. A room in his Fortress of Doom is filled with comic books, collectiblefigurines,[18] andguitars.[19] According to his computer log-in screen, his name is revealed to be "Flynn Taggart", confirming the name the 1995 Doom novels assigned him. Doomguy also has access to alternate costumes, including a wingedunicorn skin.[20] According to the character description, He stands about 7 feet 0 inches (2.13 m) tall and weighs 500 pounds (227 kg) in armor; without it, he stands 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 m) tall and weighs 360 pounds (163 kg).[21][22] A life-sized figure of the Slayer made by Studio Oxmox forDOOM (2016) stands 205 centimeters tall, suggesting the Slayer was also the same height as in the previous installment.[23]
Doomguy appears as the lead of the original 1993 video gameDoom,[24] and its sequelsDoom II,[25] andDoom 64,[26] the 2004 series retelling of the original gameDoom 3,[27] a different version of him appears in its expansion packResurrection of Evil,[28] and as Doom Slayer he appears in the 2016 series reboot, also titledDoom,[29] and in its sequelDoom Eternal.[30][31]
Doomguy also appeared in the mobile gameDoom RPG[32] andDoom II RPG.[33] and in 2016'sDoom Pinball, the virtualpinball adaptation of that game developed byZen Studios as one of the three tables of theBethesda Pinball pack, an add-on forZen Pinball 2,Pinball FX 2 andPinball FX 3.[34] He also appears inMighty Doom.
A Marine's corpse appears in a secret area inDuke Nukem 3D; they are seen halfway through theirClassic Doom death animation clutching their throat and gurgling, surrounded by various Satanic iconography. Upon seeing them,Duke Nukem says, "That's one doomed space marine".[35] Doomguy appears in the PC version ofTony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 as a secretcheat character.[36] In theSega Saturn version ofQuake, the Marine briefly appears at the end of the bonus feature "Dank & Scuz".[37] Doomguy also appeared inQuake Champions.[37] InQuake III Arena, the Marine appears in three levels under the name "Doom". The character "Phobos" is also a Doom Marine, though his skin is darker and his armor is orange rather than green. The third Doom Marine in the game, a woman named "Crash" is mentioned as being Doom's training instructor before arriving at the Arena.[38] A Doomguy costume was made available inFall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, along withCyberdemon and Cacodemon on January 12, 2021, for a limited time.[39] Doom Slayer appears as aMii Fighter Costume inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, which was released as downloadable content in October 2021.[40] On December 4, 2022, Doom Slayer appeared as an outfit alongside multiple other Doom themed cosmetics in theFortnite Chapter 4, Season 1Battle pass,[41] He also appeared in the unofficial point-and-click visual novelDoomed Love onItch.io.[42] The Doom Slayer is also set to appear inTony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, remakes ofPro Skater 3 andPro Skater 4,[43] Similar to his appearance in the PC port ofPro Skater 3.
In the 1990sDoom novels, Doomguy is referred to as Flynn "Fly" Taggart.[44] For theDoom 3 novels, a Marine with a similar role is named John Kane. His past is somewhat similar to that of Doomguy in the originalDoom, having been demoted after disobeying the command to save some of his fellow Marines. During the Hell invasion, Kane is forced to take command of several of the surviving marines despite his stripped ranking. He battles the demons single-handedly, or with a few other marines. He is depicted as compassionate to his fellow survivors, working to save a child named Theo and to save the damned in Hell. After volunteering to enter Hell to retrieve the soul cube, Campbell is shown as very impressed by him. He and Maria start to feel romantic ties to each other. At the end ofDoom 3: Maelstrom, Kane's leg is blown off and he is admired as the "man who saved Mars City".[45]
Arnold Schwarzenegger,Vin Diesel andDwayne Johnson were mooted for the role of the Marine in the 2005 filmDoom, withKarl Urban ultimately cast in the role of John "Reaper" Grimm in September 2004.[46] Urban underwent military training for two weeks under military advisor Tom McAdams.[47][48] The film's first person shooter sequence, told from Doomguy/Reaper's perspective, was completely directed by visual effects supervisorJon Farhat[49] and was filmed in 14 days after a planning period of three months.[50] While the scene is one continuous shot, multiple cuts, that Farhat called "hook-ups", were made during filming,[51] Farhat stated: "You can do it by moving a camera, and passing something, and cutting. And then rolling the camera again on a subsequent date."[52] Other hook-up styles were used by using a green screen or blue screen when a door opens or jump-cutting by whipping an object.[53] Doomguy/Reaper's gun was only used on-screen when it was needed due to its size affecting the aspect ratio.[54]
For the 2019 filmDoom: Annihilation directorTony Giglio created the character of gender-swapped Marine Joan Dark after taking inspiration fromThe Terminator andAliens, feeling that a female protagonist would be more effective in a sci-fi action film. Joan was named afterJoan of Arc. Four suits were produced for the imps, with one designed for leaping. Inspiration was drawn from Doomguy's depiction in the first threeDoom games, as Universal did not retain the rights to the Bethesda version.[55]Amy Manson and Agleya Gumnerova were then confirmed to have been cast in the role.[56] Dark's depiction as a Doom Protagonist received negative criticism from fans.[57]
In 2009,GameDaily included the Doom Marine on its list of "ten game heroes who fail at the simple stuff" for his inability to look up and down in the original series.[58]UGO Networks ranked the Marine fourth on its 2012's list of bestsilent protagonists in video games, noting his courage to continue in silence even when faced with Hell's army.[59] In 2013,Complex ranked the Doom Marine at number 16 on its list of the greatest soldiers in video games for being "the original video game space marine" and "one of the classic silent protagonists".[60] BothCraveOnline andVGRC ranked the Marine the fifth most "badass" male character in the video game's history.[61][62] Kirk McKeand ofVG247 described Doomguy as "Jesus with a super shotgun".[63] David Houghton ofGamesRadar claimed that Doomguy is the smartest player character around, even with fist bumps, violence and zero dialogue.[64] In 2021, Rachel Weber ofGamesRadar ranked him as the 47th most iconic video game character.[65]
The Doom Marine's incarnation from the 2016 game has received special acclaim for its characterization and how the game presents the player character as a representation of the player playingDoom: writing forGamesRadar, David Houghton called the presentation "incidental, not explicit", which allows the players to immerse themself completely in the character.[17] Christian Donlan writing forEurogamer theorized that "the guy inDoom is playingDoom", and explained that the main character's impatience with exposition is analogous to "the temporary frustration of being insideDoom while not being able to playDoom".[66] In his column Extra PunctuationBen Croshaw wrote that the game "establishes the player character as someone who doesn't give a flake of driedMarmite for the larger context, and only cares about ridding the planet of demons. Which is hopefully representative of the player's motivation."[67] Additional praise was given for the subtlety of Doomguy's expressions:James Stephanie Sterling noted that both the "glory kill" moves and additional pieces of animation "reinforce his consistent sense of irreverence",[15] Sterling,[15] along with a number of other reviewers including Houghton,[17] Donlan,[66] and Croshaw fromZero Punctuation noted the initial moment of the game with Doomguy throwing away a communications monitor while a mission briefing plays as a minimalistic, but effective way to convey the entire character's motivations.[68]
Doomguy was a popular choice for inclusion in the roster ofSuper Smash Bros. by fans,[69] and also by multiple websites, includingPC Gamer,[70]GamingBolt,[71]GameRevolution,[72] andShacknews staffs.[73]
The character has been the subject of extensive fan art. One popular variant involving them has fans creating and sharing images of his hypothetical visage using 3D graphics software program and AI enhancements on social media platforms.[74] On May 4, 2021, Bethesda featured Doomguy as part of aStar Wars Day tribute on its official Twitter account.[75]
WhenDoom Eternal was delayed and released the same day asAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, fans of both games begancreating and sharing artwork depicting Doom Slayer andIsabelletogether as friends, which eventually trended onsocial media in 2020. Commentators responded positively towards the fan-made pairing,[76][77][78] including acknowledgments fromAya Kyogoku, director ofNew Horizons,[79][80]as well as Bethesda.[81] Because of this pairing, when Doomguy was added as aMii fighter costume inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate in October 2021, together with Isabelle on the roster, the final update of the game was dubbed "friendship" and "love story" by video game publications.[82][83] The Doomguy and Isabelle friendship pairing has also been subject to other forms offan labor, like a fan video andcosplay.[84][85]
John Romero titled his autobiographyDoom Guy: Life in First Person.[86]
In September 2020, Limited Run Games offered a Doomguy Helmet Collector's Bundle, which includes a wearable "full-size" helmet, a recreation of the game's original floppy disk pin, and a limited edition print.[87]McFarlane Toys released two Doomguy Figurines.[88] In 2020, subscribers toTwitch Prime were entitled to an 1980s style blonde mullet themedDoom Eternal skin for Doomguy.[89] In April 2021, the Xbox brand released a series of portraits featuring Doomguy andMaster Chief to commemorate Microsoft's acquisition ofBethesda Softworks' parent companyZeniMax Media.[90] In 2023, Dark Horse and Mondo paired up to release a 12-Inch action figure of The DOOM Slayer.[91]
Frustrated, I threw my shirt off and told him to give me the gun and get on the floor – grab my arm as one of the demons! Defeated, he deferred. I aimed the gun in a slightly different direction and told Don, 'This is what I'm talking about!'
