Yoon Dong-Sik (Korean: 윤동식, born August 24, 1972, inSeoul), often anglicised toDong-Sik Yoon, is a South Koreanjudoka, andmixed martial artist.
Before competing in MMA, Yoon was a well-knownjudoka with over 50 internationaljudo competitions under his belt and had a winning streak of 47 straight victories without conceding a singlekoka, with notable wins over World champions and Olympic gold-medalists such asMakoto Takimoto,Mark Huizinga,[1]Jeon Ki-Young andToshihiko Koga.[2] Despite his impressiverésumé, Yoon never competed in the Olympics; hence he was given a nicknameJudo King Without a Crown.
Yoon made hisMMA debut atPRIDE Total Elimination 2005 against legendaryJapanese fighterKazushi Sakuraba. It was a heavily anticipated matchup in bothJapan andKorea due to the rivalry between the two nations and it was Sakuraba's comeback match after a ten month absence due to injuries. With a lack of MMA experience and knowledge, Yoon lost to Sakuraba only 38 seconds into the match.[4] After the match, Yoon accepted the offer to join Sakuraba'sTakada Dojo.[5] Yoon tasted his first victory in MMA at theK-1 Dynamite!! USA event, where he scored a surprising submission win over heavily favoredDutch kickboxerMelvin Manhoef. Yoon went on to win his second consecutive fight at HERO'S by beating formerCage Rage championZelg Galesic byarmbar after only 1 minute 29 seconds.[6]
On October 28, 2007, Yoon also beatFábio Silva byarmbar submission making that his third win inK-1 Hero's, his third victory in MMA, and his third consecutive win byarmbar. His newfound propensity for finishing opponents with anarmbar has led to fans and journalists dubbing the move the "Dongbar" when performed by Yoon.[7]
He was scheduled to facePaulo Filho on October 25, 2009, atDREAM.12,[8] however Filho withdrew at the last minute for unknown reasons. Yoon then faced last minute replacementTarec Saffiedine and won via split decision.
