TheDonetsk National Technical University (abbr.DonNTU, formerlyDonetsk Polytechnic Institute and other names[2]) is the largest and oldesthigher education institution established inDonbas, founded in 1921. Since 2024, it has been temporarily located inDrohobych,Lviv Oblast, due to thepartial Russian military occupation of Donetsk Oblast since 2014.
In its early years, it was attended byNikita Khrushchev. Following the loss of Ukrainian government control overDonetsk in 2014 during thewar in Donbas, the University was evacuated toPokrovsk.[3][4]
A small group ofcollaborationists among the faculty have claimed to continue to operate as the Donetsk National Technical University in the campus in Russian-occupied Donetsk, as a project aimed to legitimize the so-calledDonetsk People's Republic,[5][6] however diplomas they issued weren't recognized even in Russia itself and local students were officially enrolled as correspondent students at minor provincial Russian universities. Following the full-scaleRussian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the educational activities in the original university buildings in Russian-occupied Donetsk appear to have been discontinued.
On 28 February 2024, the temporary university building in Ukrainian-controlledPokrovsk was partially destroyed by a Russian missile attack.[7] It was decided to move the university's activities much further away from the frontline this time, first toLutsk (capital ofVolyn Oblast), and then toDrohobych (inLviv Oblast).
Donetsk National Technical University (DonNTU) is the first higher education establishment in the Donbas Region and one of the first technical universities in Ukraine. 27,000 students study at 7[8] faculties, 60 specialities being their major. There are 28 correspondent members and academicians of the engineering academies, 18 honorary researchers and professors among the academics of the university. A number of scientists of DonNTU are honorary and full members of foreign organizations and academies. There are professors and students whose work was supported by the Soros Fund.
From 1987—1996, the university had a group known as theDPI team [ru] participating in the popular comedic game-showKVN. It contained a number of figures, made up of students who were studying at the university and would later become prominent within Ukrainian society, includingIsmail Abdullaiev andSerhii Syvokho [uk].[9]
