Dominik Koepfer (born 29 April 1994), also spelledKöpfer,[1] is a German professionaltennis player. He achieved a career-highATP singles ranking of world No. 49 on 4 March 2024, and a doubles ranking of No. 69 on 24 June 2024. He played college tennis atTulane University.[2]
Koepfer made his ATP main draw debut at theWinston-Salem Open as alucky loser. He won his firstATP Challenger Tour title in doubles at theColumbus Challenger, partneringDenis Kudla.
Koepfer won his first match on theATP Tour, again as alucky loser at theWinston-Salem Open, defeatingTennys Sandgren.
After winning his maiden Challenger title in singles at theIlkley Trophy, Koepfer earned a wild card into theWimbledon Championships.[3] There, he won his first Grand Slam main draw match by defeatingFilip Krajinović in the first round before losing toDiego Schwartzman in straight sets.
As a qualifier at theUS Open, Koepfer defeated 17th seedNikoloz Basilashvili in the third round, before losing to eventual finalistDaniil Medvedev in four sets in the fourth round.[4]
Koepfer reached his firstATP Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal at theItalian Open, defeatingGael Monfils en route for his first top-10 win before losing to eventual championNovak Djokovic in three sets.
He reached the second round of theFrench Open for the first time, losing toStan Wawrinka in four sets.
Koepfer started his season at the first edition of theGreat Ocean Road Open. He lost in the first round to AustralianChristopher O'Connell.[5] At theAustralian Open, he was defeated in the second round by third seed and last year finalist,Dominic Thiem.[6]
Seeded sixth at theCórdoba Open, Koepfer was eliminated in the first round byFederico Coria.[7] InBuenos Aires, he fell in the second round to fifth seedAlbert Ramos Viñolas.[8] At theMexican Open, he reached his first ATP tour semifinal beating Mexican wildcardGerardo López Villaseñor,[9] fourth seedMilos Raonic,[10] andCameron Norrie.[11] He ended up losing to second seed, compatriot, and eventual champion,Alexander Zverev.[12] With this result, Koepfer climbed into the top 60 in the rankings to a career-high of No. 54 in singles. At theMiami Open, he was beaten in the first round byHugo Gaston.[13]
Koepfer began the clay-court season at theMonte-Carlo Masters. Getting past qualifying, he lost in the first round to fellow qualifierMarco Cecchinato.[14] Next, he competed at theBarcelona Open. He was defeated in the first round by fellow leftieCorentin Moutet.[15] Playing inMunich, he was eliminated in the second round by seventh seed, compatriot, and eventual finalistJan-Lennard Struff.[16] At theMadrid Open, he was beaten in his second-round match by 16th seedCristian Garín.[17] His final tournament before the second Grand slam of the year was theGeneva Open. He upset seventh seedBenoît Paire in a three-set first round victory.[18] He ended up losing in the quarterfinals to third seed and eventual champion,Casper Ruud.[19] At theFrench Open, he reached the third round for the first time and was defeated by eighth seed, former world number one, and 2009 championRoger Federer.[20]
Koepfer opened his grass-court season at theStuttgart Open. He lost in the first round toJurij Rodionov.[21] InHalle, he faced third seed Alexander Zverev in the first round. He pushed Zverev to three sets but ended up losing the match.[22] AtWimbledon, he made it to the third round for the first time where he fell to eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut.[23]
After Wimbledon, Koepfer played at theHamburg Open. He was eliminated in the second round by top seedStefanos Tsitsipas.[24] Representing Germany at theSummer Olympics, he reached the third round and lost to sixth seed and eventual bronze medalist,Pablo Carreño Busta.[25]
Starting his US Open preparation at theCanadian Open, Koepfer was defeated in the first round of qualifying by Canadian wildcardPeter Polansky.[26] InCincinnati, he fell in the final round of qualifying toMarcos Giron before earning a spot in the main draw as a lucky lower. He was defeated in the second round by seventh seed Pablo Carreño Busta.[27] Seeded 16th at theWinston-Salem Open, he reached the third round where he was beaten by top seed Carreño Busta. At theUS Open, he lost in the second round to second seed and eventual champion,Daniil Medvedev.[28]
Competing at the first edition of theSan Diego Open, Koepfer was defeated in the first round by eventual finalist Cameron Norrie.[29] At theIndian Wells Masters, he fell in the first round toEmil Ruusuvuori in three sets.[30] InVienna, he was eliminated in the final round of qualifying byGianluca Mager. Entering the main draw as a lucky loser, he lost in the first round toLorenzo Sonego.[31] At theParis Masters, he lost in the final round of qualifying toMiomir Kecmanović. Due to the withdrawal ofJenson Brooksby, he entered the tournament's main draw as a lucky loser.[32] He defeatedAndy Murray in the first round, saving seven match points; his victory was named one of the top-5 comebacks of the 2021 season.[33][34] In the second round, he upset ninth seedFélix Auger-Aliassime. With this win, he ended the Canadian's hopes of qualifying for theATP finals.[35] In the third round, he lost to seventh seedHubert Hurkacz in three sets.[36]
At theAustralian Open, Koepfer defeatedCarlos Taberner before losing to 23rd seedReilly Opelka in the second round.Due to an ongoing arm injury,[37] he decided to skip the entire clay season. As a result, his ranking plummeted to No. 149 on 18 July 2022, out of the top 150 at No. 159 on 22 August 2022, and out of the top 250 at No. 259 on 7 November 2022.
Following his title at theCalgary National Bank Challenger, he returned to the top 200 at world No. 195 climbing 64 positions up in the rankings on 14 November 2022 only to drop again to No. 202 on 28 November 2022.
Ranked No. 262, Koepfer won his third Challenger at theMexico City Open and returned to the top 200 at world No. 179 up more than 80 positions in the rankings.[38][39][40]The following week, he reached a second final at theSan Luis Open Challenger.[41] As a result, he moved another 25 positions into the top 155. He also reached the final at thePrague Open and reached the top 150 on 8 May 2023. Koepfer won his fourth Challenger title at the Challenger 175 at thePiemonte Open in Turin as an alternate and moved close to 50 positions up, a couple of positions shy of the top 100.[42]
He reached the semifinals at theLos Cabos Open where he lost to fifth seedAlex de Minaur.[43] At the same tournament, he also reached his maiden ATP final withAndrew Harris.[44]
He won his fifth Challenger at the2024 Canberra Tennis International.[45]
He then competed in the2024 Australian Open, beginning his campaign against fellow compatriot and sixth seedAlexander Zverev, falling in four tight sets. In doubles, alongside his compatriotYannick Hanfmann he reached the semifinals as an unseeded pair,[46] before losing to Italian duoSimone Bolelli andAndrea Vavassori.
At the2024 Dallas Open he reached the quarterfinals defeatingAleksandar Kovacevic andRinky Hijikata. He lost to eventual championTommy Paul.[47][48] He reached a second quarterfinal for the season at the2024 Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco, defeating qualifierTérence Atmane and eight seedFrances Tiafoe. He lost to second seedHolger Rune. He reached a new career-high ranking of No. 49 on 4 March 2024.At the2024 Miami Open, he defeatedMarcos Giron, 18th seedSebastián Báez and 14th seedUgo Humbert to reach the fourth round of a Masters for the second time, recording his first wins at this tournament.
