TheRoman Catholic Diocese of Alleppey (Latin:Diœcesis Alleppeyensis) is adiocese centered on the city ofAlappuzha in theecclesiastical province ofThiruvananthapuram in India. It lies along the Arabian Sea between the dioceses ofKochi andKollam, covering an area of 333 square kilometers.
The diocese was established on June 19, 1952, byPope Pius XII under thepapal bullEa Redemptoris Verba.[1] The diocese is headed byBishop James Raphael Anaparambil, who took charge in 2019. In addition to his role as bishop, he was appointed byPope Francis on October 11, 2024, as apostolic administratorsede plena of theRoman Catholic Diocese of Cochin.[2][3]
TheEpiscopal see is the Bishop's House which is located near theAlappuzha Beach. Thecathedral church of the diocese is the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral situated at Convent Square, Alappuzha.Arthunkal Basilica (Pilgrimage Shrine of Saint Sebastian) andThumpoly Church (Marian Pilgrimage Shrine of the Mother of God) are the most significant pilgrimage shrine churches of the Alleppey Diocese.[4]
St. Antony's Orphanage, founded by the Diocese of Alappuzha, is located opposite the Mount Carmel Cathedral,Alappuzha.[5] More than ten thousands of alumni's are working in different parts of the world from this organization which was firmly established byServant of God Reynolds Purackal and former BishopMichael Arattukulam.[6][7]
