Etymology

[edit]

The nameDinckley is first attested in 1246, in the formsDunkthele,Dinkedelay, andDinkidele, along withDinkedelegh in 1257. It comes from theCommon Brittonic words corresponding to modern Welshdin ("fort") andcoed ("woodland"); thus the first part of the name once meant "fort by the wood".Old English-speakers later took this name as the basis for a new one ending in the Old English wordlēah ("cleared land in woodland"); that name thus meant "the cleared land at Dincoed".[7][8]: 318
