Karl Diedrich Bader (born December 24, 1966)[2] is an American actor. He is best known for his comedic and voice acting roles. He has appeared as a series regular in television sitcomsThe Drew Carey Show,American Housewife, andOutsourced, along with recurring roles inBetter Things andVeep. His film credits includeThe Beverly Hillbillies (1993),Office Space (1999), andNapoleon Dynamite (2004).

He has had a prolific voiceover career, playing characters such as Hoss Delgado inThe Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy,Zeta inThe Zeta Project, Tank Evans in the filmsSurf's Up andSurf's Up 2: WaveMania, Dr. Meridian/Mandroid inTransformers: EarthSpark, and provided the voice ofBruce Wayne / Batman in multiple animated films and television series, beginning in 2008 withBatman: The Brave and the Bold.

Early life and education

Karl Diedrich Bader was born inAlexandria, Virginia, onChristmas Eve, 1966, the son ofGretta Bader (née Margaret Marie Lange; 1931–2014), a sculptor, andWilliam B. Bader (1931–2016), a foundation executive and political activist.[2] His patrilineal great-grandfather wasEdward L. Bader, who served as themayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey. He is of German and Scottish descent.[3]

When Bader was two years old, his family moved toParis, but he returned to the U.S. to attendGroveton High School. He graduated fromT.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and attended college at theUniversity of North Carolina School of the Arts.[4]

After a few guest roles on populartelevision series such asThe Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,Star Trek: The Next Generation,Quantum Leap,Diagnosis: Murder, andCheers, Bader's first major role was in the 1993 seriesDanger Theatre, playing The Searcher. He moved into cinema acting for the 1993 film version ofThe Beverly Hillbillies, and returned to television, playing Oswald onThe Drew Carey Show starting in 1995. He appeared in the 1999 filmOffice Space as Peter's neighbor Lawrence, and in the 2004 filmNapoleon Dynamite as Rex, the owner of aTaekwondodojang. He performs in the 2004 filmEurotrip as a thief. In 2010, Bader took the role of Charlie on the television seriesOutsourced.

As avoice actor, he has voiced various characters inanimated features, television series and video games, such asIce Age,The Simpsons,Buzz Lightyear of Star Command,The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy,South Park andThe Penguins of Madagascar. In 2012, he reprised his role as Rex in the animated TV seriesNapoleon Dynamite. He played the Russian Cosmonaut Yuri in Disney'sSpace Buddies. Bader has lent his voice to several differentBatmancartoons, portraying both heroes and villains:Batman Beyond,The Zeta Project,The Batman, and starring as the title characterBruce Wayne / Batman inBatman: The Brave and the Bold andHarley Quinn. Bader also voicesGuy Gardner inGreen Lantern: The Animated Series.

His other voice credits includeJLA Adventures: Trapped in Time, Judah Mannowdog inBoJack Horseman, theandroid Zeta inThe Zeta Project, and Fiskerton inThe Secret Saturdays.

In 2016, Bader starred in the "It's the Obvious Choice" series ofTime Warner Cable television commercials[5] and starred as Greg Otto inABC sitcomAmerican Housewife from 2016 to 2021. From 2014 to 2019, Bader had a recurring role onHBO sitcomVeep. From 2016 to 2022, Bader has had a recurring role as Sam's best friend, Rich, onBetter Things.

Personal life

Bader has been married to actress Dulcy Rogers since May 1997.[2] They have two children.[6][7][2]

Bader predominately lives inHancock Park, Los Angeles. In 2017, he listed a townhouse he owns for rent.[8]

Bader supportedLibertarian candidateGary Johnson during the2016 United States presidential election.[9] In 2020, he endorsedJoe Biden in the2020 presidential election, after initially voting forElizabeth Warren in the2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[10] In 2024, he endorsedVice PresidentKamala Harris in the2024 presidential election.[11]
