Diana Lynn Hayes (born 1947[1]) is anAfrican-American Catholic theologian specializing inwomanism andBlack theology. The first African-American woman to earn apontifical doctorate in theology, she is professor emerita ofsystematic theology atGeorgetown University.[2]
Hayes did undergraduate study at theUniversity at Buffalo before gaining aJuris Doctor degree atGeorge Washington University National Law Center. She gained a baccalaureate degree and alicentiate in sacred theology from theCatholic University of America,[2] writing a dissertation on the theology ofJames H. Cone.[3] She went on to gain a doctoral degree in religious studies, and a pontifical doctorate atKU Leuven,[2] where she wrote a dissertation onliberation theology.[4]
In addition to teaching atGeorgetown University, Hayes has also served on the faculty of theOblate School of Theology andXavier University of Louisiana's Institute for Black Catholic Studies. Hayes is a member of theBlack Catholic Theological Symposium, and has contributed toNational Catholic Reporter.
