Deworski Odom (born April 11, 1977) is a formerAmerican sprinter who specialized in the100 metres. As a 17-year-old, he won a bronze medal in the100 metres at the1994 World Junior Championships, surpassingHenry Thomas'sWorld Youth Best over this distance.
Odom was born inCordele, Georgia, to Lessie Odom, then 16.[1] When he was 4 years old, he moved with family toPhiladelphia. He began running as a sixth-grader at Shoemaker Middle School.[2] He later attendedOverbrook High School.[3] In the 1995National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships inSyracuse, New York, Odom set three national records.[4]
Although recruited by every major track program in the United States, Odom did not meet the academic requirements to attend college. He went toWallace State Community College inHanceville, Alabama, where his career derailed.[5] He eventually attendedSt. Augustine's University inRaleigh, North Carolina, for one season before turning professional.[6]
As of 2017[update], Odom serves as track and field coach at his alma mater, Overbrook High School in Philadelphia.[6]
