Devil's Pocket is a smallneighborhood in theSouth Philadelphia section ofPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania, United States. The neighborhood, bordered by Christian and LeCount streets, Grays Ferry Avenue, and theNaval Square development (the formerU.S. Naval Asylum),[1] consists of rowhouses tucked near an industrial landscape near theSchuylkill River. A historicallyIrish-American neighborhood,[2] Devil’s Pocket has seen real estate development andgentrification in recent years, including a major expansion of theChildren’s Hospital of Philadelphia.[1][3]
According to one legend, Devil's Pocket got its name after a priest said the local youth were rough enough to steal from thedevil’s pocket.[4][1]
The 1983 novelGod's Pocket byPete Dexter and its later2014 film adaptation are set in the fictional South Philadelphia neighborhood of God's Pocket, which is based on the real-life Devil's Pocket and its tough, working class reputation.[1]
