Deutsch-Wagram (literally "German Wagram",German pronunciation:[ˈvaːɡʁam]), often shortened toWagram, is a village in theGänserndorf District, in thestate ofLower Austria,Austria. It is in theMarchfeld Basin, close to theVienna city limits, about 15 km (9 mi) northeast of the city centre.

History

[edit]

The settlement was probably established in the BavarianMarch of Austria by colonists in the course of theOstsiedlung. Wagram was first mentioned in a 1258tithe register, drawn up when KingOttokar II of Bohemia ruled over theAustrian duchy. It was named after a now silted up meander of theDanube river, where the waves (German:Wogen) crashed against the shore (Rain). In 1560 it received the prefixDeutsch- to differ it fromKroatisch-Wagram (today part ofEckartsau), a village founded byCroat settlers in the course of the 1529 OttomanSiege of Vienna.[citation needed]

In 1580 the population turnedProtestant but was forcefully converted in theCounter-Reformation under theHabsburg emperorFerdinand II shortly afterwards.[citation needed]

Deutsch-Wagram was the location of the 1809Battle of Wagram fought between invadingFrench troops underNapoleon and anAustrian army led byArchduke Charles.

The population rose after the area was connected with the Austrian capital by the opening of theEmperor Ferdinand Northern Railway (the present-day AustrianNorth Railway) in 1837. The former village was elevated to the status of amarket town in 1929 and receivedtown privileges in 1984. The firearm companyGlock was founded here in 1963.
