2017–present: Science fiction films

[edit]
Villeneuve at2018 Cannes Film Festival

In February 2015, it was announced that Villeneuve would directBlade Runner 2049, the sequel toRidley Scott'sBlade Runner (1982).[33] Scott served as the film's executive producer on behalf ofWarner Bros.[34][35] It was released on October 6, 2017 to critical acclaim but underperformed at the box office.[36] David Ehrlich ofIndieWire wrote, "Few filmmakers of the 21st century have risen to prominence and prestige with the forcefulness ofBlade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve, whose seemingly unstoppable career has been bolstered by a steady balance of critical respect and commercial success. In fact,Christopher Nolan is the only other person who comes to mind, and the similarities between the two of them are hard to ignore."[37]

In December 2016, it was announced Villeneuve would directDune, a new adaptation of the1965 novel forLegendary Pictures with Villeneuve,Eric Roth, andJon Spaihts writing the screenplay.[38][39]Timothée Chalamet,Rebecca Ferguson,Oscar Isaac,Stellan Skarsgård,Jason Momoa, andZendaya starred in the film.[40][41][42][43][44][45] The film was released on October 22, 2021, byWarner Bros. Pictures to critical acclaim.[46] The sequel,Dune: Part Two, was green-lit after the success of the first film[47] and released in March 2024 to widespread critical acclaim.[48][49][50] It became his highest-grossing film to date and became theseventh highest-grossing film of 2024.

Villeneuve was a producer for both films, which producerMary Parent said "...as big and as epic as this film is, there were many times where it almost felt like you were on the set of an independent film," and that "...he’s very very smart about where to spend money."[51] He is in the process of developingDune: Part Three, his third and final of theDune films, based on the 1969 novelDune Messiah.[52] Production ofDune: Part Three began in July 2025.[53][54][55][56]

He was the recipient of thePrix Iris Tribute Award at the26th Quebec Cinema Awards.[57]

Upcoming projects

[edit]

Villeneuve is also attached to direct a historical drama aboutCleopatra forSony Pictures (based onthe biography byStacy Schiff) and an adaptation ofArthur C. Clarke's science fiction novelRendezvous with Rama forAlcon Entertainment.[52][58][59] He has also confirmed a secret project is in the works, on which he said, "...I cannot talk about right now, but that needs to see the light of day quite quickly. So it would be a good idea to do something in between projects, before tacklingDune Messiah andCleopatra. All these projects are still being written, so we'll see where they go, but I have no control over that."[60]

In April 2024, it was reported that Villeneuve was in talks to potentially reunite withLegendary Pictures and direct a film adaptation of theAnnie Jacobsen non-fiction bookNuclear War: A Scenario.[61]

Amazon MGM Studios announced in June 2025 that the company had selected Villeneuve to direct the26th James Bond film, with an expected release date in 2028.[62][63][64][65] Villeneuve released a statement, "I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever sinceDr. No withSean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come."[66] Villeneuve had previously been offered to directNo Time to Die (2021), but declined in favor of directingDune.[67]

Influences and style

[edit]

Starting withPolytechnique, Villeneuve became known for a visual style based on long takes, precisemise-en-scène, steady camerawork, periods of wordless silence to emphasize moody atmosphere, and shallow focus, high-contrast cinematography. Amongst a core theme of Villeneuve's films are characters who struggle with their identities in worlds of isolation, such as the case withSicario (Kate Macer),Enemy (Adam Bell),Arrival (Louise Banks),Blade Runner 2049 (Officer K), and theDune movies.

Villeneuve has citedSteven Spielberg,Stanley Kubrick,Alfred Hitchcock, theCoen brothers,Paul Thomas Anderson,Ridley Scott,Sam Mendes,Jean-Luc Godard,François Truffaut,Ingmar Bergman,Yorgos Lanthimos, andChristopher Nolan as his main cinematic influences.[68][69][70][71][72]

Personal life

[edit]

Villeneuve is married toTanya Lapointe, a journalist and filmmaker,[73] and he has three children from a previous relationship.[74] Villeneuve and Lapointe work together on film projects as director-producer partners, with Lapointe saying, "I’m an extension of his brain."[75][76]

His daughterSalomé Villeneuve is also a filmmaker, whose debut short filmIII premiered at the2022 Venice Film Festival.[77] Previously, Villeneuve had a relationship withMacha Grenon.[78][79]

Villeneuve is an active supporter of the arts in Quebec and Canada, encouraging young filmmakers in the country.[80]
