Demi Schuurs (pronounced [ˈdeːmi sxyrs] ; born 1 August 1993) is a Dutch professionaltennis player who specializes in doubles.On 22 October 2018, she peaked at No. 7 in the doublesrankings . In February 2015, she reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 512.
She has won twenty doubles titles on theWTA Tour , as well as one singles title and 20 doubles titles on theITF Circuit .
Schuurs won the junior events of the doubles tournaments at2011 Australian Open and2011 US Open .[ 1]
2018–2020: Four WTA 1000 titles, world No. 7, WTA Finals debut & semifinal[ edit ] She qualified for the2018 WTA Finals doubles event, partneringElise Mertens [ 2] where she reached the quarterfinals.[ 3] [ note 1]
2021–2022: Fourth WTA Finals with fourth different partner and two times semifinalist[ edit ] She qualified for the2021 WTA Finals withNicole Melichar and reached the semifinals for a second time.[ 3] [ note 1]
In 2022, she also qualified for her fourthWTA Finals in a row with a fourth different partner,Desirae Krawczyk .[ 4] [ 5] The pair reached the semifinals, making it the third time for Schuurs.[ 6]
2023: WTA Tour singles debut, fifth WTA Finals[ edit ] Without a singles ranking she qualified at theGuadalajara Open for her first singles main draw at a tour–level on her eighth WTA singles qualifying attempt, getting her first singles ranking in the top 1000 since 2016.[ 7]
She qualified for theWTA Finals withDesirae Krawczyk for a fifth year in a row that the tournament was played and for the second time with the same partner.[ 3] [ note 1]
2024–2025: New partnership with Muhammad, twentieth title at Indian Wells[ edit ] Schuurs' first competition of the season was representing the Netherlands in theUnited Cup , a mixed team competition in Perth, Australia. Although the team's performance was not good, being eliminated in the group stage, Schuurs won both mixed doubles matches she played.[ 8]
Still on the Australian swing, Schuurs participated in theAdelaide International in partnership withAsia Muhammad . They reached the quarterfinals.[ 3] [ note 1] Next, she entered theAustralian Open with a new partner, the BrazilianLuisa Stefani , and they reached the quarterfinals.[ 3] [ note 1] Continuing her campaign on hardcourts, now in theMiddle East , Schuurs and Stefani competed at theQatar Ladies Open where they won the title without losing a single set.[ 3] [ note 1]
In October 2024, Schuurs teamed up withYuan Yue to win the doubles at theNingbo Open , defeating top seedsNicole Melichar-Martinez andEllen Perez in the final.[ 9]
Schuurs reached three rounds of 16, at the2025 Australian Open , and at the2025 Qatar TotalEnergies Open and the2025 Dubai Tennis Championships with partner Muhammad.[ 3] [ note 1] Again with Muhammad, she reached the final at the2025 BNP Paribas Open defeating top seeds world No. 1Katerina Siniakova and world No. 2 Taylor Townsend.[ 10] They won the title defeating the Slovak-British duo ofTereza Mihalikova andOlivia Nicholls .[ 11] [ 12]
Schuurs is a daughter of former Dutch internationalhandball playerLambert Schuurs . Her younger brotherPerr is a professionalfootball player.[ 13]
During an interview with theWTA in 2020, Schuurs revealed that she is in a relationship with a woman named Carmen.[ 14]
