TheDelta J orThor-Delta J was an Americanexpendable launch system of the late 1960s. Only one was launched, with theExplorer 38 spacecraft. It was a member of theDelta family of rockets.
The Delta J was derived from theDelta E. The first stage was aThor missile in theDSV-2C configuration, with threeCastor-1solid rocket boosters clustered around it. ADelta E was used as the second stage. TheAltair third stage of the Delta E was replaced with the more powerfulStar 37DSRM.
The only Delta J to fly was launched fromVandenberg Air Force Base,Space Launch Complex 2E on 4 July 1968. It successfully placed theExplorer 38 satellite intomedium Earth orbit.[1][2]
