Deirdre Duke (born 9 June 1992) is anIreland women's field hockey international. She was a member of the Ireland team that played in2018 Women's Hockey World Cup final. Duke has also wonIrish Senior Cup andWomen's Irish Hockey League titles withUCD. She has also captained the UCD team. Duke also won anAll-Ireland Under-14 Ladies' Football Championship withDublin and represented theRepublic of Ireland women's national under-17 football team.
Duke is the daughter of Gretta Duke, née Carroll, who is originally fromBallycanew,County Wexford.[3] She was educated atAlexandra College,Northeastern University andUniversity College Dublin.[4][5][3] Duke graduated from the UCDSutherland School of Law in September 2017 with aBCL with Social Justice degree.[6] In addition to playingwomen's field hockey, Duke also played bothLadies' Gaelic football andwomen's association football in her youth. She played Gaelic football forKilmacud Crokes and was also a member theDublin team that won the 2005All-Ireland Under-14 Ladies' Football Championship, defeatingDonegal 5–8 to 4–7 in the final.[7][8][9] Duke also played association football for Alexandra College, where her teammates includedEmily Beatty, and represented theRepublic of Ireland women's national football team at schoolgirl level. Her international teammates includedCiara Grant,Naomi Carroll andDora Gorman.[10][11][12][13]
Duke playedfield hockey withAlexandra College. In 2011, along withEmily Beatty, she was a member of the Alexandra College team that won theLeinster Schoolgirls' Senior Cup. In the final they defeated aSt. Andrew's College team that includedGillian Pinder.[14] Duke also played for bothThree Rock Rovers andHermes.[15][16]
Duke started playing forUCD in 2011–12.[16] On 13 May 2012, together withDora Gorman,Chloe Watkins andAnna O'Flanagan, Duke was a member of the UCD team that won theIrish Senior Cup, defeatingLoreto 3–2 in the final.[17][18][19] Duke was also in the squad when UCD won the Irish Senior Cup in 2014.[20] In 2013–14, together withKatie Mullan,Gillian Pinder,Nicola Evans, Anna O'Flanagan andEmily Beatty, Duke was a member of the UCD team that won their firstWomen's Irish Hockey League title.[21][22] On 2 April 2017 Duke scored the winner in the 2017 Irish Senior Cup final as UCD defeatedCork Harlequins in the final. She was also captain of the UCD team.[6][23][24][25] She captained the UCD team again when they defeatedPegasus 4–0 to retain the cup in 2018.[26] Duke also captained UCD to further Irish Hockey League titles in 2016–17 and 2017–18. In 2017 UCD completed a treble when they also won theEY Champions Trophy after defeatingHermes-Monkstown in apenalty shoot-out.[15][27][28] Duke also helped UCD win five Chilean Cup titles[29][30] and played for UCD in the2015[31][32] and2018 EuroHockey Club Champions Cups.[33]
The 2012–13 season saw Duke attendNortheastern University, where she played forNortheastern Huskies.[5] While inBoston, Duke was watching the2013 marathon when the event was interrupted by aterrorist attack. She was standing close to the spot where the second bomb went off but had left the area just half an hour before the explosions.[3]
Following her performance withIreland at the2018 Women's Hockey World Cup, Duke announced she would be joining Düsseldorfer Hockey Club for the 2018–19 season.[29][30]
Duke representedIreland at Under-16, Under-18 and Under-21 levels[5][12][25] before making her senior debut againstScotland in June 2013. Duke was a member of the Ireland team that won the2015 Women's EuroHockey Championship II, defeating theCzech Republic 5–0 in the final.[34]
Duke also represented Ireland at the2018 Women's Hockey World Cup and was a prominent member of the team that won the silver medal.[35][36][37][38] On 21 July 2018 she scored twice against theUnited States as Ireland won their opening pool stage game 3–1.[39][40][41][42] She also featured in further pool games againstIndia[43] andEngland,[44] in the quarter-final against India,[45] in the semi-final againstSpain[46] and in the final against theNetherlands.[47]
Together withLizzie Colvin,Nicola Evans,Anna O'Flanagan andGillian Pinder, Duke was one of five lawyers in the Ireland squad at the2018 Women's Hockey World Cup. Duke is a trainee solicitor with A&L Goodbody.[59]
