Dayr al-Fardis (Arabic:دير الفرديس,romanized: Dayr al-Fureidīs) is a town in northwesternSyria, administratively part of theHama Governorate, southwest ofHama. Nearby localities includeKafr Buhum to the northeast,Tumin andal-Rastan to the southeast andHoula to the southwest. According to theCentral Bureau of Statistics, it had a population of 5,890 in the 2004 census.[1] Its inhabitants are predominantlySunni Muslims.[2] By the 21st century, about half the villages residents were ethnicTurkmen.[3]
During theByzantine era, Deir al-Fardis's inhabitants was slow to convert toChristianity, eventually becoming Christian by the 540s.[4] In 1829, during the lateOttoman era, the village was part of thesanjak ("district") of Hama, and consisted of 25feddans. It paid 2,640qirsh in taxes to the treasury.[5]
