TheDe Mond Nature Reserve, in theOverberg betweenStruisbaai andArniston, Western Cape,South Africa,[2] has been aRamsar sitewetland since 1986.[3]
The reserve covers the mouth of the Heuningnes River and covers 918 ha (2,270 acres).[4] Shifting dunes block the river's mouth and serve as a breeding ground for various species ofbirds. The area is also a habitat forreptiles,crustaceans, andseahorses.[5][3]
It is composed of different coastal vegetation communities, including dunemilkwood forests andsalt marshes making up the estuarine environment.[2]
