Dawn at the Alamo is a 1905 painting byHenry Arthur McArdle, displayed in theTexas State Capitol's Senate Chamber,[1] inAustin, Texas, United States.[2] The artwork has received some negative criticism by scholars for depictingDavid Crockett andWilliam B. Travis with "an angelic glow amid dark imagery".[3]
McArdle painted two versions ofDawn at the Alamo 25 apart, with the 1881 version destroyed in a fire at the Texas state Capitol.[4] The picture is considered one of McArdle's two masterpieces, with the other beingThe Battle of San Jacinto, completed in 1898.[5]
