David Lane (born early 1940s)[1] is a British television and film director, known for his association with the productions ofGerry andSylvia Anderson'sAP Films.
Originally a TV editor,[2] Lane directed several episodes ofThunderbirds, including "Attack of the Alligators!", followed by the feature film sequelsThunderbirds Are Go (1966) andThunderbird 6 (1968). He was producer for the later Anderson seriesJoe 90 andThe Secret Service, an episode director forUFO, atechnical director forSpace: 1999 and an episode director forNew Captain Scarlet.
Away from the Anderson productions, Lane wassecond unit director on 1978'sSuperman (reuniting him with Anderson effects directorDerek Meddings) and the sequelsSuperman III,Supergirl andSuperman IV: The Quest for Peace. His other screen credits include the seriesCatweazle (as an episode director) and the filmsBrass Target (as editor),[3]Santa Claus: The Movie (as second unit director) andMuppet Treasure Island (as second unit director).[2]
In the 1970s, Lane, joinedClearwater Films as acommercials director. In 1990, he and his long-term business partner Michèle Fabian-Jones co-foundedproduction company Lane Fabian Jones.[4][5] He worked forWill Vinton Studios from 1996 to 1998.[2]
In 2006, Lane co-founded Pineapple Squared Entertainment with Fabian-Jones andThomas the Tank Engine & Friends directorDavid Mitton. He was working with Mitton on a computer-animated adventure series calledAdventures on Orsum Island until Mitton's death in 2008, at which point production was discontinued.
