David Harry Coote[4] was born on 11 July 1982[5] inNottingham.[6]

Career

Coote started refereeing as a sixteen-year-old. He refereed in theNotts Alliance League, theNorthern Counties East Football League, theNorthern Premier League and theConference North before being promoted to theFootball League list of referees as an assistant referee.[7][8] His first game in this role came in aLeague Two game betweenStockport County andHereford United. He was promoted to the list of Football League referees in 2010.[9] In May 2014, Coote was the referee for the2014 League One play-off final atWembley Stadium betweenLeyton Orient andRotherham United.[10]

Coote officiated his firstPremier League game betweenNewcastle United andWest Bromwich Albion on 28 April 2018, a game which ended as a 1–0 victory to West Brom.[11][12] Ahead of the2018–19 season, Coote was promoted to Select Group 1.[13][14]

Coote was appointed to officiate the2023 EFL Cup final betweenManchester United andNewcastle United on 14 February 2023, which Manchester United went on to win 2–0.[15]

Video incident and suspension

On 11 November 2024, Coote was suspended byPGMOL after video footage emerged in which he made derogatory comments aboutLiverpool and describedJürgen Klopp as an arrogant "Germancunt".[16][17][18] According toThe Guardian, the "video appears to date from the 2020–21 season".[18] During that season, Coote was thevideo assistant referee for theMerseyside derby atGoodison Park on 17 October, a game which saw Everton goalkeeperJordan Pickford go unpunished for whatTNT Sports called "a horror tackle" on Liverpool defenderVirgil van Dijk, which resulted in a season-ending injury.[18][19] Having watched the footage of the tackle, Coote did not call for any action on Pickford, instead focusing on a marginal offside in the buildup to the collision.[20]

Coote initially claimed that the video footage of his comments was not real;[21] however, he later admitted that it was genuine.[22] On 13 November, another video emerged allegedly showing Coote snorting a white powder, believed to becocaine, duringEuro 2024,[23][24] leading to Coote being suspended byUEFA.[25]

The Football Association was also investigating Coote for possiblematch fixing.[26] Allegedly, Coote had prearranged to hand out a yellow card during theChampionship game betweenLeeds United andWest Brom in October 2019, in order to benefit a friend through betting. Coote denied any wrongdoing.[27][28] On 9 December, the investigation concluded and Coote was sacked with immediate effect.[29] In February 2025, Coote was banned by UEFA.[30]

Personal life

Coote is the son ofDavid Coote, who played cricket forNottinghamshire County Cricket Club.[9] In January 2025, Coote came out asgay, saying he hid his sexuality during his career due to fear of abuse.[31][32] In September 2025, Coote was charged byNottinghamshire Police with making an indecent image of a child.[33] On 14 October 2025, he pleaded guilty to the charge.[3]
