Darryl Sims (born June 23, 1961) is an American former professionalfootball player who was adefensive tackle for theWisconsin Badgers as well as four seasons in theNational Football League (NFL) for thePittsburgh Steelers from 1985 to 1986 and theCleveland Browns from 1987 to 1988. Sims is currently theUniversity of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Assistant Chancellor, Intercollegiate Athletics.[1]
Sims graduated fromBassick High School inBridgeport, Connecticut.
At Wisconsin playing for coachDave McClain in 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1984 (he was academically ineligible in 1983), Sims finished 10th in school history, with 39 career tackles for loss and tied for 8th with 17 career sacks. His single-season mark of 24 tackles for loss in 1982 is the third-best single-season number in Wisconsin history. He was a first teamAll-Big Ten selection in 1981, 1982 and 1984.[2] He helped lead the1984 Badgers team to theHall of Fame Bowl. Overall, 16 players from that team went on to play in the NFL, and Sims was one of three first-round draft picks, along withAl Toon andRichard Johnson.
He was selected by the Steelers in the first round of the1985 NFL draft.[3]
After his playing career, Sims coached at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as well as inNFL Europe for three different teams: assistant coach of theAmsterdam Admirals from 2000 to 2005, head coach of theCologne Centurions in 2006, and assistant coach of theBerlin Thunder in 2007. He also was assistant defensive line coach with theOakland Raiders in 2006 under head coachArt Shell.[1]
Sims continued his education for a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication in 2003, and a master's degree in Educational Leadership in 2005.[4]
