Danny Roberts (born 14 July 1987) is an Englishmixed martial artist who competed in theWelterweight division of theUltimate Fighting Championship. A professional since 2010, he has also competed forCage Warriors.[3]
Born inCroydon, London, Roberts grew up on a deprived estate with his mum and ten siblings before moving toHartcliffe,Bristol at age 9. Unfortunately, things were only marginally better and Roberts who grew up without his father around and began to find himself drifting down the wrong path with the wrong people. After being expelled from seven different schools in London and Bristol, Roberts moved to Birkenhead following his dreams where Roberts began boxing at age 16. He compiled a 3–1 pro record, before making his debut in mixed martial arts in 2010.[4][3]
After going 1–1 as an amateur, he made his professional debut in December 2010. He competed for several regional promotions acrossGreat Britain, including a stint inCage Warriors. He was able to compile a record of 11 - 1 before signing with the UFC on the heels of a first round finish ofJim Wallhead in September 2015.[5]
Roberts was expected to make his promotional debut againstMichael Graves on 10 December 2015 atUFC Fight Night 80.[6] However, Graves was forced out of the bout with an injury and replaced byNathan Coy.[7] Roberts won the fight via technical submission in the first round.[8]
Roberts next facedDominique Steele on 23 April 2016 atUFC 197.[9] He won the back-and-forth fight via unanimous decision.[10] Both participants were awarded aFight of the Night bonus.[11]
Roberts facedMike Perry on 8 October 2016 atUFC 204.[12] He lost the back and forth fight via knockout in the third round.[13]
Roberts facedBobby Nash on 16 July 2017 atUFC Fight Night 113.[14] He won the fight via knockout in the second round.[15]
Roberts was expected to faceSheldon Westcott on 16 December 2017 atUFC on Fox 26.[16] However, Westcott was removed from the card for undisclosed reasons in early December and was replaced byNordine Taleb.[17] Roberts lost the fight via knockout in the first round.[18]
Roberts facedOliver Enkamp on 17 March 2018 atUFC Fight Night 127.[19] He won the fight via knockout in the first round.[20]
Roberts was expected to faceAlan Jouban on 22 July 2018 atUFC Fight Night 134.[21] However, on 12 July, Jouban was pulled out from the fight, citing a neck injury.[22] Jouban was replacedDavid Zawada.[23] He won the fight via split decision.[24] This win earned him theFight of the Night award.[25]
Roberts facedCláudio Silva on 16 March 2019 atUFC Fight Night 147.[26] He lost the bout via an armbar submission in the third round.[27]
Roberts faced promotional newcomerMichel Pereira on 18 May 2019 atUFC Fight Night 152.[28] He lost the fight via knockout in the first round.[29]
Roberts facedZelim Imadaev on 9 November atUFC on ESPN+ 21.[30] He won the fight via knockout in round two.[31]
Roberts was scheduled to faceNicolas Dalby on 21 March 2020 atUFC Fight Night: Woodley vs. Edwards.[32] Due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, the event was eventually postponed .[33] The bout with Dalby was rescheduled and was expected to take place on 25 July 2020 atUFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Till.[34] However, Roberts was injured and he was replaced byJesse Ronson.[35]
Roberts was scheduled to faceTim Means on 19 June 2021 atUFC on ESPN 25[36] However, the pairing was scrapped by the promotion in the days leading up to the event for undisclosed reasons.[37]
Roberts facedRamazan Emeev on 16 October 2021 atUFC Fight Night 195.[38] Roberts won the fight via controversial split decision.[39] 10 out of 12 media outlets scored the bout as a win for Emeev.[40]
Roberts facedFrancisco Trinaldo on 7 May 2022 atUFC 274.[41] He lost the bout via unanimous decision.[42]
Roberts facedJack Della Maddalena on 19 November 2022, atUFC Fight Night 215.[43] He lost the fight via technical knockout in round one.[44]
Roberts faced Jonny Parsons on 22 July 2023 atUFC on ESPN+ 82.[45] He lost the fight via TKO in the second round.[46] Despite the loss, he received his thirdFight of the Night bonus award.[47]
On 7 January 2025, it was reported that Roberts was removed from the UFC roster.[48]
Roberts was scheduled to faceNeiman Gracie in the inaugural Global Fight League event on May 24, 2025 at GFL 1.[49] However, all GFL events were cancelled indefinitely.[50]
