Daniel Altmaier (German pronunciation:[ˈdaːni̯eːlˈʔaltmaɪɐ,-ni̯ɛl-]; born 12 September 1998) is a German professionaltennis player. He has a career-highATP singles ranking of world No. 46, achieved on 3 November 2025. He is currently the No. 2 singles player from Germany.[3]

Personal life

Altmaier's father Jurij is Ukrainian and his mother Galina is Russian. He speaks Russian, German, and English.[4]

2017: ATP debut

Altmaier made his ATP main draw debut as a qualifier at the2017 Geneva Open, defeatingAlexander Ward and Petr Michnev in qualifying. He lost toSam Querrey in the first round.

He won his first ATP tour-level match as alucky loser at the2017 Antalya Open when he beatVíctor Estrella Burgos. In the next round, he defeated wildcardMarsel İlhan to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost toYūichi Sugita. Both of his victories were decided by a third set tiebreak.[5]

2020: Major debut and first top-10 win

Shoulder and hip injuries held back Altmaier's progress in his tennis career, but victories in qualifying overTallon Griekspoor andRuben Bemelmans led to his Grand Slam debut at the2020 French Open, where he defeatedFeliciano López, 30th seedJan-Lennard Struff and 7th seedMatteo Berrettini, all of them in straight sets.[6][7] In the fourth round, he lost toPablo Carreño Busta.

2021: Two ATP semifinals, Top 100 debut

In October, Altmaier recorded his first win at a Masters 1000 level on his debut at the2021 BNP Paribas Open defeatingSam Querrey.[8]

Altmaier made his debut in the top 100 on 15 November 2021 at World No. 98 following the final at the2021 Knoxville Challenger. He followed this by winning his third Challenger title for the year at the2021 Puerto Vallarta Open.

2022: Top 60

He made his Grand Slam debut at the2022 Australian Open and2022 Wimbledon Championships.

At the2022 US Open also on his debut, he tookJannik Sinner to five sets in his first round match.[9]

2023: First Masters quarterfinal, top 50

In April, Altmaier claimed his seventh Challenger title at the2023 Sarasota Open defeating defending championDaniel Elahi Galán.[10]He entered the2023 Mutua Madrid Open as a lucky loser replacing 18th seedPablo Carreño Busta directly into the second round, for only his second time at this round at a Masters 1000 level.He defeated compatriotsOscar Otte andYannick Hanfmann to reach the fourth round for the first time in his career at the Masters level.[11] He reached the quarterfinals for the first time defeatingJaume Munar in straight sets and moved 30 positions back up in the top 65 in the rankings.[12][13] He lost toBorna Ćorić in straight sets.[14][15]He continued his good form at the2023 French Open where he reached again the third round, defeating eight seedJannik Sinner in five sets in 5 hours and 26 minutes, the longest match sinceLorenzo Giustino againstCorentin Moutet six hours, 5 minutes win in 2020, the fifth longest overall of the tournament[16] and the second longest of the season after Kokkinakis against Murray at the Australian Open.[17][18]

He qualified for the2023 Halle Open as a lucky loser but had to withdraw last minute due to hip injury.[19][20]

At the2023 US Open, he won his first main draw match at this Major defeatingConstant Lestienne. As a result he reached the top 50 in the singles rankings on 11 September 2024. At the2023 Paris Masters, he reached the third round after a walkover fromTaylor Fritz who was injured.[21]
