Daniel Anthony D'Aniello (born September 14, 1946) is an Americanbillionaire businessman.[1][2][3][4] He is the cofounder and chairman ofthe Carlyle Group, aprivate equity firm headquartered in Washington, D.C.[3]
D'Aniello grew up in anItalian-American family[5] inButler, Pennsylvania, and graduated fromButler Senior High School.[2] He graduated fromSyracuse Universitymagna cum laude in 1968, where he was a member ofBeta Gamma Sigma, an honor society for business students and scholars.[1][2][4] He received an MBA from theHarvard Business School in 1974, where he was a Teagle Foundation Fellow.[1][2][4]
Following his graduation from Syracuse University, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a supply officer aboard the USS Wasp (CVS18) until 1971.He was a financial officer atPepsiCo andTWA.[1][2][3][4] He was later vice president for finance and development at theMarriott Corporation.[1][2][3][4] He was responsible for the valuation of major mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, debt and equity offerings, andproject financings.[3]
In 1987, he co-founded the Carlyle Group withWilliam E. Conway Jr., andDavid Rubenstein.[1][2][3][4] He now serves as chairman of the board.[3]
He is on the board of trustees of theAmerican Enterprise Institute,[1][6] and on the board of trustees of his alma mater,Syracuse University,[7][8] and on the corporate advisory council of itsMartin J. Whitman School of Management[1][3] and theIVMF advisory board.[9]
In July 2017, D'Aniello was awarded theArents Award, Syracuse University's highest alumni honor,[10] and an honorary doctorate in 2021.[11]
Daniel and Gayle D'Aniello have donated over $50 million to Syracuse University in support of the construction and endowment of theDaniel and Gayle D’Aniello Building, the National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC), and theInstitute for Veterans and Military Families.[12][13]
He lives inVienna, Virginia with his wife, Gayle.[14] Together they have two daughters.[15]
