British mathematician
Daniel Segal (born 1947)[ 1] mathematician and a Professor of Mathematics at theUniversity of Oxford . He specialises inalgebra andgroup theory .
He studied atPeterhouse, Cambridge , before taking aPhD atQueen Mary College ,University of London , in 1972, supervised byBertram Wehrfritz , with a dissertation ongroup theory entitledGroups ofAutomorphisms of InfiniteSoluble Groups .[ 2] All Souls College at Oxford, where he was sub-warden from 2006 to 2008.[ 3] [ 4]
His postgraduate students have includedMarcus du Sautoy andGeoff Smith . He is the son of psychoanalystHanna Segal and brother of philosopherGabriel Segal as well as Michael Segal, a senior civil servant.
