TheDaily Naya Diganta[1] (lit. 'Daily New Horizons') is aBengali daily newspaper published inBangladesh since 2004.[2]
It is part of Diganta Media Corporation, which was owned byMir Quasem Ali, a politician of theJamaat-e-Islami.[3] The television channel,Diganta TV, is a sister concern of the newspaper.[4] The television was launched in August 2008.[5] Alamgir Mohiuddin is the editor of Naya Diganta.[6]
Daily Naya Diganta reporter was cautioned for misrepresenting a statement of prosecution witness in theInternational Crimes Tribunal in January 2012.[7] On 17 June 2012, the chairman of the holding company Mir Quasem Ali was arrestedRapid Action Battalion on charges of war crimes during the 1971 war.[3][8] He was convicted and sentenced to death by theInternational Crimes Tribunal.[9] Bangladesh Information MinisterHasanul Haq Inu accused the newspaper of carrying out "propaganda" against the International Crimes Tribunal.
A Dhaka high court indicated the editor of Naya Diganta for libel regarding the case of defamingMuhammad[10] and another case was filled for defamingSheikh Mujibur Rahman against Naya Diganta editor.[11] A faction ofDhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) has expelled its units atDaily Sangram, Naya Diganta,Weekly Sonar Bangla andDiganta Television as those media houses are run by Jamaat-e-Islami andIslami Chhatra Shibir. According to the DUJ press release on 29 November 2015; it had been included that the four media houses were being run by those accused of committing crimes against humanity and the DUJ thinks keeping them as its members is not only unethical, but also against the spirit of the 1971 war.[12]
