Dackarna is amotorcycle speedway club fromMålilla in Sweden who compete in theSwedish Elitserien. Their home track since 1993 has been theSkrotfrag Arena which was the venue for theGrand Prix of Scandinavia and is the current venue for theSpeedway Grand Prix of Sweden.[1] They ride in theElitserien[2] and are six times champions of Sweden.[3][4]
The team was founded in May 1935 asMålilla Motorklubb and in 1949 renamed itself Dackarna (in honour ofNils Dacke) and the club began league racing. The team raced at theGamla Målilla Motorstadion but in 1956, the team rode their matches at theVäxjö Motorstadion.
In1957, Dackarna won division 1 and were declared the winners of theSwedish Speedway Team Championship for the first time; the team includedRune Sörmander andDan Forsberg.[5][6] They then dominated the championship by winning successive titles in1958[7] and1959[8] before claiming a fourth success in1962.[9] Riders like Sormander,Per-Tage Svensson andÅke Andersson were instrumental during this period.
Dackarna switched between the first and second league for the next 30 years until 1997. Despite a largely quiet period they did win five tier two titles in1971,1972,1986,1991 and1995.Tommy Johansson also won the 1973 Swedish title as a Dackarna rider. In 1992, the Gamla Målilla Motorstadion was demolished and a new Målilla Motorstadion opened on 29 June 1993 and Dackarna would become the resident speedway team.
When the team received the backing of a major new sponsor (Svelux) and were renamedTeam Svelux in1997. Svelux were taken over byLuxo in 2002 and the team name was changed toLuxo Stars.[10]
In2006, the sponsorship deal expired and the team name reverted to Dackarna. Success soon returned to Dackarna when they won the2007 Elitserien, after defeatingVästervik in theplay-off final. The team includedAndreas Jonsson,Freddie Lindgren,Hans Andersen andPeter Karlsson.[11][12][3]
In2021, Dackarna became Swedish champions for the sixth time, after defeatingSmederna in Eskilstuna. The team includedTai Woffinden,Jason Doyle,Maciej Janowski andJacob Thorssell.[3]
Smålänningarna andTeam Dalej compete in the tiers below the Elitserien and were a collaboration between Dackarna andLejonen allowing less senior riders the opportunity to race. The collaboration ran from 2020 and the Smålänningarna name came from and old team that had riders fromSmåland.[13]
