DR Ultra was aDanish nationaltelevision channel for children aged 9–14, produced by thepublic service broadcaster,DR. The channel launched on 4 March 2013, replacingDR Update.[1]

Along withDR Ramasjang, DR Ultra was based inAarhus.

The station aired daily from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.

History

[edit]

Ultra Nyt was the channel's kid-friendly news programme, presented byInge Thorup andJonas Madsen, among others.[2] Other programmes included the game showKvit eller dobbelt, a children's spin-off of a historic game show (the Danish adaptation ofThe $64,000 Question) that had been carried for four times between the 1950s and the 90s.Gepetto News also aired on the network, though less often.

In 2020 (already as a digital-only channel)Ultra smider tøjet received international attention (and criticism) for showing naked adult bodies to children.[3][4][5]

Closure of the linear channel

[edit]

In 2015, DR's general director,Maria Rørbye Rønn, wrote in a column that the 7-12 demographic was watching Disney Channel,YouTube andNetflix more than DR Ultra.[6] As a result of cost-cutting measures at DR approved in 2018, the channel was set to close in 2020.[7] DR Ultra was subsequently replaced by an online channel on its streaming service DRTV.[8] In line with the changes, the target audience changed from 7-12 to 9-14.[9] The channel closed on 2 January 2020 alongsideDR3 andDR K.[10]
