Dániel Gazdag (Hungarian:[ˈɡɒzdɒɡˈdaːnijɛl], born 2 March 1996) is a Hungarian professionalfootballer who plays as amidfielder for theColumbus Crew ofMajor League Soccer and theHungary national team.
Gazdag made his debut withBudapest Honvéd in September 2014. In June 2015, he extended his contract with Honvéd until 2019.[3] During the2016–17 season, Gazdag became a regular for the team that won theNemzeti Bajnokság I.[4][5] In 2019, he extended with Honvéd through 2022.[6] On 3 April 2021, Gazdag scored 2 goals within 46 seconds in a 2–2 league draw againstÚjpest.[7] At the conclusion of the season, Gazdag was recognized as the league's best player and was also credited with scoring the goal of the season.[8]
On 11 May 2021, Gazdag was signed by thePhiladelphia Union ofMajor League Soccer for a reported$1.8 million, and his two-year contract included a club option for a third and fourth year.[9][10][11] After visa issues delayed his debut, he appeared for his new club as a substitute in a 1–0 victory atD.C. United.[12] He then departed for his national team forUEFA Euro 2020, where he was injured at a pre-tournament training camp.[13] He returned to play for the Union on 26 June as a second-half substitute.[14][15] He converted a penalty kick to score his first goal for his new club on 4 August.[16] On 30 October, Gazdag scored two goals in a 3–2 loss toMinnesota United FC.[17]
During the 2022 season, Gazdag recorded goal-scoring streaks of four consecutive matches on two occasions, and a five-match streak once. Included in that five-match streak was his first career hat trick in the Union’s match against theColorado Rapids on 27 August.[18] He scored his second hat trick of the season in a match on the last game of the regular season againstToronto FC.[19] He started all 38 matches across all competitions, scoring 24 goals, including one in the2022 MLS Cup final, which his team ultimately lost.[19]
On 30 April 2024, he became the club's all-time leading goal scorer with his 57th goal across all competitions.[20] He scored a hat trick on 20 July in a win at home againstNashville SC.[21]
On 11 April 2025, Gazdag was transferred to theColumbus Crew.[22] He scored his first goal for the club on 19 July on a penalty kick againstD.C. United.[23]
Gazdag made his debut for theHungary national team on 5 September 2019 in a friendly againstMontenegro, as a starter.[24]
He scored his first goal, againstAndorra, on 31 March 2021.
On 1 June 2021, Gazdag was included in the final 26-man squad to represent Hungary at the rescheduledUEFA Euro 2020 tournament.[25] He withdrew from the squad on 16 June due to injury without making an appearance.
On 14 June 2022, Gazdag scored Hungary's fourth goal as they beatEngland 4–0 in theUEFA Nations League.[26][27]
On 14 May 2024, Gazdag was named in Hungary's squad forUEFA Euro 2024.[28] He made one appearance at the tournament, coming on as an 87th-minute substitute forBarnabás Varga in a 2–0 loss toGermany.[29]
