Cyrinda Foxe (bornKathleen Victoria Hetzekian; February 22, 1952 – September 7, 2002) was an American actress, model and publicist, best known for her role inAndy Warhol's Bad (1977). She was married to bothDavid Johansen of theproto-punk bandNew York Dolls andSteven Tyler of thehard rock bandAerosmith. She is the mother ofMia Tyler.
Foxe was born Kathleen Victoria Hetzekian inSanta Monica, California, to anArmenian family. She grew up as anarmy brat in an abusive household. After graduating from high school, she lived inTexas briefly before settling inNew York City, where she got a job working as an assistant toGreta Garbo. She later changed her name and began frequentingMax's Kansas City, a popular Manhattan nightclub, and appeared in Andy Warhol's filmAndy Warhol's Bad (1977).
Foxe had relationships withDavid Bowie andJames Williamson ofThe Stooges while working underTony Defries as a publicist forMainMan, Bowie's management company. She also appeared in the music video for Bowie's 1972 single, "The Jean Genie". Bowie wanted the video to depict "Ziggy as a kind of Hollywood street-rat" with a "consort of theMarilyn brand". This led to Foxe's casting, and she flew from New York to San Francisco especially for the shoot.[1] Bowie said of the song "I wrote it for her amusement in her apartment. Sexy girl."[2] Foxe records in her memoir that Bowie said to her "I want to write you a song. What do you want?", to which Foxe replied "something like theYardbirds".[3] Foxe in later years maintained a fondness for Bowie referring to him as a "great lover" and stating that she "really cherish[ed her] time" with Bowie.[3]
In his memoir,Arthur Kane characterized Foxe as being "bright [and] very magnetic" and having "an effervescence about her" as "[she was] very much a character of her own creation."[4]
Having grown up idolizing theRolling Stones, Foxe became closely associated with theNew York Dolls. In 1977, after years of dating, she marriedDavid Johansen, the band's lead singer.
After less than a year of marriage to Johansen, she began dating Steven Tyler. Foxe and Tyler married and had a daughter,Mia. Foxe and Tyler divorced shortly before Aerosmith made a comeback in the late 1980s.
In 1997, Foxe'smemoir,Dream On: Livin' on the Edge with Steven Tyler and Aerosmith, co-written withDanny Fields, was published.[5] Not long after the book was released, Foxe announced that the paperback edition ofDream On would include nude photos of Steven Tyler, but Tyler won a lawsuit in 1999, preventing Foxe from publishing the photos. In 2000, she launched a web site in which she was selling nude pictures of Tyler, but the site closed by the end of the year.
In 2001, Foxe had a mild stroke. She receivedMedicaid andfood stamps, but she had no apartment or place to live. Myra Freidman organized a benefit atCBGB to raise money for Foxe. Steven Tyler, who also paid her hospital bills, donated a signed Aerosmith guitar to the benefit, which sold for $5000.[6]David Bowie also donated an acoustic guitar. Tyler agreed to pay for a room for Foxe at theGramercy Park Hotel where, on August 28, 2002, she married musician Keith Waa.[7]
Foxe died at age 50 from an inoperable brain tumor on September 7, 2002.[6]
