Medieval commotes of Wales

Cynllaith orCynllaeth was acommote (cwmwd) of north eastWales in thecantref ofSwydd y Waun (laterChirkland) which was once part of theKingdom of Powys and later part of the smaller kingdom ofPowys Fadog.[1]

Cynllaith, or at least the part of it calledCynllaith Owain, was part of the inheritance ofOwain Glyndŵr in 1370.[2] The titlesBaron of Glyndyfrdwy andLord of Cynllaith Owain were used by the dispossessed former ruling family ofPowys Fadog before Owain was proclaimedPrince of Wales in 1400.[3]

The episode "Monk's Hood" ofthe Cadfael Chronicles includes a scene in a Welsh court inLlansilin within this commote.
