Theblue-backed tanager (Cyanicterus cyanicterus) is a species of South American bird in the tanager familyThraupidae. It is the only member of thegenusCyanicterus.
It is found inBrazil,French Guiana,Guyana,Suriname, andVenezuela. Its naturalhabitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowlandforests.
The blue-backed tanager wasformally described in 1819 by the French ornithologistLouis Pierre Vieillot under thebinomial namePyranga cyanicterus.[2] Thetype locality isCayenne in French Guiana.[3] This species is now the only member of the genusCyanicterus that was introduced byCharles Lucien Bonaparte in 1850.[4][5] The wordcyanicterus is formed from theAncient Greekkuanos meaning "dark-blue" andikteros meaning "jaundice-yellow".[6] The blue-backed tanager ismonotypic: nosubspecies are recognised.[5]
