Cvelferija is a geographic region inCroatian part ofSlavonia, in eastern Croatia. Villages in the region areGunja,Vrbanja,Soljani,Strošinci,Đurići,Račinovci,Rajevo Selo,Posavski Podgajci andDrenovci, which are better known as “the heart of Cvelferija“.[1]
The name for the region comes from theGerman wordzwölf or twelve. Specifically, villages were part of theSlavonian Military Frontier in the past, where they were part of the Twelfth Company of the Frontier.[1] At that time this region was bordering theOttoman Empire, while in the present the region bordersBosnia-Herzegovina (to the south) andSerbia (to the east).
The whole region is administratively located within theVukovar-Srijem County, on its southern edge.
Every year in one of these villages, the cultural eventRaspjevana Cvelferija [hr] (in English: 'Singing Cvelferija') take place. The event is attended by folklore groups from Cvelferija and their guests.
