Curruca is a genus of Sylviid warblers, best represented inEurope,Africa, andAsia. All of these species were formerly placed in the genusSylvia.
The genusCurruca was introduced by the German naturalistJohann Matthäus Bechstein in 1802. Thetype species (bytautonomy) is thelesser whitethroatCurruca curruca.[2][3][4] The nameCurruca is the Latin word for an unidentified small bird mentioned by the Roman poetJuvenal.[5] The genus was split fromSylvia in theHoward and Moore Checklist in 2014 after amolecular phylogenetic study published in 2011.[6] The split is now recognised by most modern authorities.[7]
