Thetype species (bytautonomy) is thelesser whitethroatCurruca curruca.[2][3][4] The nameCurruca is the Latin word for an unidentified small bird mentioned by the Roman poetJuvenal.[5] The genus was split fromSylvia in theHoward and Moore Checklist in 2014 after amolecular phylogenetic study published in 2011.[6] The split is now recognised by most modern authorities.[7]
