Cristina Bucsa Bucsa (Romanian:Cristina Bucșa; born 1 January 1998) is a Moldovan-born Spanish professionaltennis player. She has career-highrankings of world No. 54 in singles, achieved on 3 November 2025, and No. 19 in doubles, achieved on 10 June 2024.[2] She is currently the No. 1 Spanish doubles player. She won the bronze medal indoubles at the2024 Summer Olympics[3] and also sevenWTA Tour doubles titles.

Early life

Bucșa was born inChișinău, Moldova. Her father,Ion Bucșa, is a former Olympicbiathlete who wasMoldova's flag bearer at the1998 and2002 Winter Olympics.[4][5] When she was three years old, her family moved toCantabria in northern Spain; they originally moved toLas Fraguas before settling inTorrelavega.[6] Bucșa attended the Instituto Marqués De Santillana in Torrelavega, where she was awarded the title of Illustrious Alumna in December 2022.[7] She speaks Spanish, Romanian, English, and French.[8]

Bucșa began playing tennis at the age of five.[9][10] In 2014, she moved toBarcelona to train at theCentre d'Alt Rendiment de Sant Cugat del Vallès,[4][11] but in 2016 she moved back to Torrelavega where she currently lives and trains.[12] She is coached by her father, who is self-taught and also acts as her physiotherapist.[4][13] Being unsponsored, she buys her own kits and rackets for the tour.[12][14] She does not have any public social media profiles, only usingFacebook to keep in touch with other tennis players.[15]

She received her Spanish passport in 2014 and began representing Spain in 2015.[4]

Career

2017–2020: ITF Circuit titles

Bucșa won her first ITF Circuit titles in both singles and doubles in 2017. In May 2017, she won the 15k event in Santarém, defeatingValeria Savinykh in the final.[16] In November 2017, she and doubles partnerYana Sizikova won the2017 Open de Valencia, defeatingGeorgina García Pérez andAndrea Gámiz in the final.[17]

She entered thequalifiers of the2019 Wimbledon Championships, but lost toSamantha Murray Sharan in the second round.[18] One month later, she won theOpen Araba en Femenino with a win over Shalimar Talbi in the final.[19]

2021–2022: Major and WTA 1000 debuts

She entered the singles main draw of a major for the first time at the2021 US Open, after defeatingKateryna Baindl,Elvina Kalieva, andOcéane Dodin in thequalifying competition.[20]

In 2022, she qualified for theAustralian Open and theFrench Open, but lost in the first round of both.[21][22] Later that year, Bucsa also qualified for her first WTA 1000 event at theCanadian Open.[23][24] At theUS Open, she recorded her first win at a Grand Slam by defeatingKaja Juvan, but lost to 19th seedDanielle Collins in the second round.[25] She andWeronika Falkowska won the doubles title at theAndorrà Open, defeatingAngelina Gabueva andAnastasia Zakharova in the final.[26]

2023: Top 100 debut and major third round in singles

Bucșa reached the top 100 in the singles WTA rankings on 16 January 2023.[27][28] She qualified for theAustralian Open and reached the third round recording her first two wins at this major tournament overEva Lys andBianca Andreescu.[29][30] She then lost toworld No. 1,Iga Świątek, in the third round.[31][32] This was her best result at a Grand Slam tournament thus far.[33] At theLyon Open, she won her first WTA doubles title withBibiane Schoofs.[34] At theIndian Wells Open, she reached the second round of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career, defeatingKatie Swan as a qualifier.[35]

She made her main-draw debut atWimbledon and defeatedKamilla Rakhimova for her first win at this major tournament, before losing to fourth-seededJessica Pegula in the second round.[36][37] She andAlena Fomina-Klotz won the doubles title at theContrexéville Open, defeatingAmina Anshba andAnastasia Dețiuc in the final.[38]

She entered the main draw of theCanadian Open as a lucky loser, but lost toPetra Martić in the first round.[39] On her debut at thCincinnati Open, she upset 13th seedBelinda Bencic to reach the second round.[40] At theGuadalajara Open, she double bageled former top-ten playerKristina Mladenovic.[41] In mid-December, she won her firstWTA 125 singles title atLimoges, defeatingElsa Jacquemot in the final. She also won the doubles title there, partnering Yana Sizikova and defeatingOksana Kalashnikova andMaia Lumsden in the final.[42]

2024: Olympics bronze, Madrid doubles title

She began her season by reaching the doubles semifinal of theBrisbane International withAlexandra Panova.[43] She qualified for theAdelaide International as a lucky loser and defeatedJasmine Paolini in the first round,[44] before losing to top seedElena Rybakina in the second.[45][46] Following this, she reached a new career-high singles ranking of No. 56, on 15 January 2024.[2] At theAustralian Open, she reached the doubles quarterfinals with Panova.[47][48] As a result, she reached the top 50 in doubles on 29 January 2024.[2] InAbu Dhabi, she reached the quarterfinals as a lucky loser, but once again lost to top seed Rybakina.[49] InDoha, she and partnerMonica Niculescu reached the doubles quarterfinal.[50] She then made her debut at theDubai Championships as a lucky loser by replacingOns Jabeur in the second round, but lost to eventual finalistAnna Kalinskaya.[51]

Seeded fourth in singles inBogotá, she defeatedYou Xiaodi andJule Niemeier, before losing to her doubles partnerKamilla Rakhimova in the quarterfinals.[52] She and Rakhimova later won the doubles title in Bogotá by defeating the third-seeded team ofAnna Bondár andIrina Khromacheva in the final.[53] InMadrid, Bucșa defeatedHarriet Dart,[54] before losing to 10th seedDaria Kasatkina in the second round.[55][56] Seeded eighth in doubles, she and compatriotSara Sorribes Tormo won the title defeatingBarbora Krejčíková andLaura Siegemund in the final, becoming the first all-Spanish doubles team to win in Madrid.[57][58][59] This was Bucșa's first WTA 1000 title, which brought her to a career-high doubles ranking of No. 27 on 6 May 2024.[60][61] The following month, Bucșa won her firstWTA 500 doubles title inStrasbourg, partnering Niculescu and defeatingAsia Muhammad andAldila Sutjiadi in the final.[62] En route to the title, Bucșa and Niculescu upset the second-seeded team ofDemi Schuurs andLuisa Stefani in the semifinal.[63]

In May, she recorded her firstFrench Open singles win against qualifierYuliia Starodubtseva in the first round,[64][65] before losing toElisabetta Cocciaretto in the second.[66] In doubles, she and Niculescu upset the 14th-seeded team ofSofia Kenin andBethanie Mattek-Sands in the second round.[67] Following her French Open doubles run, she achieved a career-high doubles ranking of No. 19 and surpassed Sorribes Tormo as the top Spanish female doubles player on 10 June 2024.[68]

She made herOlympic debut inParis, where she reached the second round insingles with a win overPetra Martić.[69] Seeded eighth indoubles with Sorribes Tormo, they won the bronze medal.[70] Following her bronze medal win, she became the first female and first athlete to be commemorated on thePaseo Torre de la Vega in her hometown of Torrelavega.[71][72] At theChina Open, she reached the fourth round of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career, defeating wildcard entrantYao Xinxin, 11th seedLiudmila Samsonova and 24th seedElise Mertens.[73][74] Her run was ended byKarolína Muchová.[75]

2025: First career singles and second WTA 1000 doubles finals

In March, Bucșa andMiyu Kato reached the doubles final of theMiami Open, but lost toMirra Andreeva andDiana Shnaider.[76][77][78] En route, they upset the top seeds and world No. 1 and No. 2 players,Kateřina Siniaková andTaylor Townsend.[79]

She defended her doubles title at theCopa Colsanitas withSara Sorribes Tormo, defeatingLaura Pigossi andIrina Bara in the final.[80][81]

AtWimbledon, Bucșa defeatedAnca Todoni[82] and 22nd seedDonna Vekić[83] to reach the third round at the grass-court major for the first time, at which point her run was ended by lucky loserSolana Sierra.[84]

Teaming withNicole Melichar-Martinez, she won the doubles title at theMonterrey Open, overcomingGuo Hanyu andAlexandra Panova in the final.[85]

Wins over qualifierClaire Liu,[86]Alexandra Eala[87] and 19th seed Elise Mertens[88] saw Bucșa make it through to the fourth round of a major for the first time at theUS Open, where she lost to world No. 1 and eventual champion,Aryna Sabalenka.[89]

In October at theHong Kong Open, Bucșa defeated qualifierMa Yexin[90] and eighth seedEmiliana Arango[91] to reach the quarterfinals, where she was given a walkover when her opponent, top seed Belinda Bencic, withdrew from the tournament due to a thigh injury.[92] In the semifinals, she overcame fifth seedMaya Joint to make it into her first tour singles final,[93][94] which she lost to third seedVictoria Mboko, in three sets.[95] Despite her defeat, Bucșa reached a new career-high singles ranking of world No. 54 on 3 November 2025.[96]
