Cringle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hole through which to pass a rope
A cringle at the corner of asail.

Acringle is an eye through which to pass arope. In nautical settings, the word refers to a small hole anywhere along the edge or in the corner of asail, rimmed with stranded cordage and worked into theboltrope.[1] Typically it encloses a metalgrommet for reinforcement and to reduce wear. In this context, cringle andgrommet coincide enough that the two are sometimes used interchangeably.[2][3]
